Help with fault codes
I have a couple of fault codes relating to an intermittent fault on both cooling fans - they cut in whenever they like. Sounds like a jet turbine warming up.
18080 - Coolant fan control 1
P1672-004- Open or short to ground, intermittent
18308 - Coolant fan control 2
P1900 - 004 - Open or short ground, intermittent
Any help appreciated. The indie reckons it could be a 10 mins or 10 hour job, so any pointers where to start looking first would be a great help.
Cheers

Thanks TechNick. I should have thought to do a search first.TechNick wrote:Quick search brought up this thread, which may help

Is there one control unit for both fans ? If not, then is it likely both ECM have died as both fans are coming up with the same fault in my case ?

Re: Help with fault codes
Is the water temp reading fine? I had a faulty sensor that played havoc with my fans. Can't remember the fault code it threw, though. I made a thread for it a little while back.

Re: Help with fault codes
If you clear them, do they come back? Could be old codes from a previous wire disconnection.
Do an output test to spin up the fans and see if they do.
If not, check the fuses behind the dash. They are big ones. I'd be surprised if you had an intermittent code if the fuses were gone, but it's something that needs to be eliminated.
Then log your temps (to the ECU and to the dash) to see if they are coherent.
Each fan has its own controller. One of them is integrated into the fan unit, the other is bolted under the chassis member. Someone posted a photo of the location recently.

Re: Help with fault codes
Fair point - I was going by the dash gauge.
Re: Help with fault codes
The dash uses a different coolant temp feed to the ECU (plus it's pinned to 90 unless there is a huge variation).

Re: Help with fault codes
Which is a good point. So best practice - even the slightest deviation above 90, no matter how minor - stop IMMEDIATELY.
