Not a good morning. My box is goosed (2004 RS6 Plus). 5mths after warranty ran out

Can anyone recommend a transmission specialist near Birmingham please?

I used a brilliant place in Bromsgrove on my old 200sx years ago, fantastic place, they used were a motor sport specialist, 6R4s e.t.c, even did Colin McRaes cars, but i cant remember the name of the place now and i know they moved location (poss to Derby was it?). If anyones knows them and knows where they went that would be useful.

Failing that, anywhere that knows what theyre doing (i.e not Audi).

What are your symptoms?

I don't know anyone but a quick Google would lead me to go and see the following people to see what my impressions were:

Then I'd probably run as fast as I could to MRC or Unit20.

(Don't judge a book by its cover, I know, but man it's hard sometimes).

usually symptoms.. doesnt engage gears when accelerating under load, revs rising/slipping, work 'ok' driven gently, but as soon as any torque is applied it gets all confused.

Gearbox oil was topped up just last week because it had a very slight seapage from a casting mount (thats now been sealed). Spoke to them and they said it barely needed any so it doesnt sound like its been low on oil

So these symptoms started afterwards?

no, it was fine for a week. Collected the car week last tuesday, no issues and ive driven a couple of hundreds miles since then.
Pulled out a junction swiftly this morning on the way to work, car was still cold but i needed to get in to a gap in traffic (30), then a half a mile later changing up in to 3rd it was really harsh. Went in with a bit of a thud.
Tried a few firm accelerations in D, S and Manual and the same story in each, revs rise and it gets confused whether to engage the gear or not, less so in manual mode though.

Did this place know how to check the level in this box? You wouldn't believe how often people think you just have to fill it until it overflows.

Not sure, i would hope so. He rebuilt the engine and actually owned the car prior to me buying it, but i cant say if he knows about transmissions.

Is the dip stick accessible without stripping half the engine bay out?
(ive just realised.. im guessing there ISNT one as its supposedly "sealed for life")

There's no dip stick. You have to fill it up from the bottom with the engine running until it overflows at a certain temperature. It's not particularly difficult but it's easy to make incorrect assumptions about how it's done.

could it be that these issues im experiencing may be due to incorrect top up i wonder? Odd hows ive had the car for almost a year and not a problem until this morning?

(ive not tried "switching it off and back on again" as it mentions at the end of that article yet)

If your fluid level is incorrect then you would get similar symptoms. However, a borked box could also give you those symptoms so don't get your hopes up too much.

Could also be a blocked strainer. My Rangey would slam into gear and then one day I changed the strainer and ATF. It drives like a new car ever since (well, the transmission bit, the rest is still falling to bits).

I personally would change the ATF and strainer, but it's a risk that it could be money down the drain if the box still needs a rebuild.

i have a friend with odb equipment so ill pop it round tonight, see it throws anything useful up.

Ive just tried driving it again and its still the same.

I think it will have to go all the way back up to Blackpool where i bought it from because theyre good enough to lend me a loan car while its being done (and they know the car)

I got the error codes last night..

"17114 Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio

There was also an abs code
" 00597 Wheel Speed Impulses; Deviation

Im wondering if there actually is contamination in there after the leak was sealed and the transmission topped up?

*edit* actually, I also asked the garage to rotate the wheels front to back. Unlike to be related I think but just thought I should mention it in case.

I don't think the errors are related, but I would definitely check the tyre sizes. If they are the same size, but different brands, the fronts are worn differently to the rears, then maybe the speed difference is enough to generate this DTC.

For the gearbox it doesn't really tell us anything other than there's a major problem transmitting power from the engine to the wheels. Could be low ATF or blocked strainer. Or something more sinister. No specific code for a particular gear ratio, so it sounds like it's happening in all gears. Or maybe it just hasn't occured enough in a specific gear to log the code for that ratio.

I just got back from the tyre centre and swapped the front to rears back how they were. No difference, but then I guess I would need to clear the errors again if it had of been causing the problem?

Im just going to take the car back up North to the garage. Maybe suggest trying a fluid and filter change first and if that does work send the transmission off.
