Going Over Bumps Car Loses Control for a second - why?

Hi guys

I test-drove an RS6 a couple of weeks back (C5) and on the test drive if you hit a bump it felt like the car lost control for a split second. Especially on the rear. There was a kind of fish tailing sensation. Only for a brief moment, then felt ok again.

Naturally did not buy the car as it was actually a complete shed.

However, I remember having the exact same issue on an RS6 around 2-3 years back but the same sensation was more noticeable from the front.

It's almost as if (?) the wheel is knocked off straight for a second by the bump and feel out of control for a split second whilst the wheel gets straight again?

It's really odd, but a very distinct and noticeable sensation. Actually feels a little dangerous!!

What could this be?? Wheel bearing, lower suspension arms???

I'm about to view another and, from the sellers description, I have a feeling his may be doing something similar so I need to know what to budget for to set this issue right.

Hopefully someone here has come across this before??

Any help much appreciated.

If its DRC you will likely get a 'thump' sound as well ,like an anti roll bar has broken, or similar to a wide tyre going in and out of a large pothole.
You should also be able to see where oil has leaked down the shock that's at fault.
DRC shock around £600 at a specialist , or £800 at a stealer

Could just be badly worn bushes all round.

DRC failed or failing. Mine was rough at low speeds, then hit anything going over 60 and was scary as all hell. Set of Koni Yellow struts and golden for years now...

Did it have any arbs fitted  .
When the drc failed on mine the handling was scary but had no knocking. Could be the shocks have failed on that car, not really a huge money fix if you don't want the best coil overs.

Hi,

Before condemning the DRC, Consider getting the rear top mounts checked.

Mine would step to the left at the rear.. When checked the rear left top mount was shot.

Good luck

Sure. Either way, it's some seriously worn suspension and you gotta wonder how it got through an MOT.
