3.5A drain w/ all fuses out!

Post by SuprSi » Sun Jun 07, 2015 7:20 pm

So I'm having trouble tracking down a electrical gremlin. As the title says, with all the fuses out it's still drawing 3.5A, the seats are still live though and I can't find the fuse for them, or get to any connectors underneath. The lumbar adjustment has recently packed up so I'm thinking it might be related.

Any ideas would be muchly appreciated!

Hmmm, after leaving the battery disconnected for a while I reconnected and mystery drain was gone, start and stop car and there's a 2.2a drain, moved passenger seat about trying to get to connector (and failing), and current is gone again.

Keeping fingers crossed for the moment but I guess I need to have a proper look at passenger seat.

How long are you leaving the car to shut down? Takes a few minutes. Mine has a 0.023ma drain after 10 mins.

Thanks Bilko, I need to have another look tonight but it looks like it wasn't draining overnight.

Yesterday when I was looking at it, the car was unlocked but with all interior lights off and doors shut. I did notice the central locking was using ~0.5A before I pulled the fuse but that may have been because it wasn't locked. Thanks for letting me know a good stand-by current.

With *all* the fuses out? you're still getting a current drain? Sounds improbable.

Did you remove the fuses from the engine bay and under the dash, too?

3.5A is quite a lot. I if I had to guess I'd say the v51 run-on pump.

Hmm, possibly. That was with all the fuses pulled out from the board at the side of the dash and all fuses underneath the dash on the driver side. I didn't realize there were more in the engine bay too, where abouts are they located?

I thought it was weird the seats were still powered though, does anyone know where they are fused from? We couldn't get to the connector underneath, if that's where it is.

It looks like the battery wasn't getting run down overnight, but the last few days it's been running the battery flat within 24 hours. I mis-diagnosed it as a bad battery so now have a new one in there too. The alternator seems to be running strong but I've been topping the battery up to avoid loading it up too much charging a flat battery all the time.

Cheers.

The 2 30A seat fuses are behind the dash, on the left of the relay/fuse carrier.

Check your 200A for signs of corrosion.

There are also some fuses, I believe, in the ECU box under the bonnet.

Yeh, SAI and afterrun coolant pump, IIRC.

Sorry to hijack with a noob question (trying to learn)....but is the after run pump the noise I hear when I shut of the engine? It dies out about 5 seconds after I turn off the ignition.

I noticed it once I opened up the ECU box and found that the fuse was not plugged in properly, I assumed it was the previous owner (a complete fncktard, who had tried to tune the car himself - which Sweegie condemned as very unsafe). Anyways....once I plugged it back in, I started getting the "afterrun" noise.

Why would anyone disconnect it?...if indeed we are talking about the After run pump.
Thanks
J

Doubt you'd hear the afterrun pump unless it was seriously broken. Also, it stays on for ages.

Probably what you are hearing are the main fans.

Hmm, I need to get in that ecu box to pull those last fuses. I checked it with VCDS yesterday, there was one code that said something along the lines of radiator fan actuator short to ground. I cleared the codes and drove the car for a bit and it didn't come back. I did the function tests to run up the fan and it was ok. Maybe a chafed wire or something? Idk, more investigation required.

Am I right in thinking to get the ecu box apart I need to take the windscreen wipers of and pull that plastic bit of trim off?

Also after a very spirited drive it turns out the coolant overrun pump is audible. It's pretty quiet but you can definitely hear it.

Cheers.

When Sweegie talked me through it, we didnt remove the windscreen wipers, just the plastic trim.
Thanks
