Only used my car about 4 times since the camel service and suspected there was an odd noise. The garage has rung to tell me the above has happened. What sort of costs am I going to incur and how big is the job? Any advice would be great fully received

From the photos on ETKA the chain that for the oil pump is nearer the passenger side at the front of the car, and runs off the crank sprocket then to the oil pump. I think this is all hidden behind a large front plate, which itself sits behind all the cambelt gubbins.

Essentially its in the same cavity as the cam chain for cylinders 5-8. The tensioner itself looks to be part number 077115124A and isn't that expensive ($60) but I don't know how easy it would be to change it. I'll try to look tonight. I'd hope if might be possible to change if you remove the sump and then the tensioner was right next to the pump. The tensioners are really just a spring loaded plastic guide and will wear after time. I don't think the oil pump sprocket/chain/crank sprocket need a specific orientation (like a timing belt) in order to work, just need the right tension. If the chain has stretched then that'd be a lot of work to change.

Are they 100% sure its the oil pump tensioner? The cam chain tensioner for that bank sits directly above it and they have been known to fail with a rattle noise on start up, noise at certain revs or alternatively or just permanently slackened.

I'd suggest you elimate those first before you delve into the oil pump.

Thanks for the info though Nobby! I have to wait for a tensioner as the local stealer doesn't have one and eurocarparts etc don't hold them at the moment.

It's looks like it's fairly straight forward to install them. I take it you've got the sump and baffle off? It looks like you just need to need to unbolt the old one and bolt the new one on.

I also have a rattle noise on start up :/

Worth checking it's not your can chain tensioners - they are also fairly common.

Be interesting to see what the oil pump tensioners are like on our cars. Can't recall anyone else changing them. I suppose the next time I change my oil could drop the sump and have a look what mine is like.
