Exhaust Recommendation(s)

Post by R5XVB » Sat Jan 17, 2015 4:29 pm

There's a company local to me called RMS Engineering who manufacture and fit stainless steel exhausts. They have quoted me £500 for replacement of the flexible joints, de-cat and stainless steel replacement pipes from the 'flexi' to the tailpipe, fitted.

It's a good price and they are experienced, however my concern is that without having designed the exhaust and tested it could this potentially offer less performance than a Miltek system would free up? Has anyone had experience of using such an exhaust system not by a big brand, rather a small producer of systems and asides what would other owners recommend? For the extra few hundred quid I'm thinking go with what is proven...

Hi David,

DO NOT use RMS in Prestwick, i got a custom stainless fabricated for my S2 a few years back and it was an absolute disgrace!! In the end i had to get half of it cut out and remade at C and C stainless exhaust in Hillington, they did a super job with proper mandrel bends etc, the difference in quality was night and day. I believe that RMS were good in their day but had nothing but cowboys working there when i was unfortunate enough to use them.

Seriously, head round to C and C and check out the quality of their workmanship.

Good luck mucker.

Thanks, shall do...

They did my Shogun 3.5 V6 and it was 'lo-ouuuu-d' and like you say they seem to be rather cottage industry now, shall look at your recommended supplier but more input from other members much appreciated. I hope to do the full system with stage 2 map, new filters and, well you know.

Might have to punt the Allroad post MOT but hey ho. :bigwave:

I have the down pipes now with '200' sports cats, fitting is going to be fun and I guess the easiest way is dropping the rear of the engine and working from below - woo hoo - so thinking about shortcuts. Has anyone tried cutting the original down pipes and welding on a flange before the flexible joint, same at new s/steel pipe to piece in the cats?

Was thinking that the time and hassle to do this method might be easier than dropping engine as much of the fabrication could be done on the bench, good welds and it should maintain integrity. Bolt the Miltex to the back of that lot and... :D

Unfortunately quoted eye watering money - double that of an off the shelf Miltek.

I've used various places over the years in Scotland. Meercat weren't too great for me, Stainless creations did a generally nice and tidy job. Not heard great stuff about RMS to be honest.

When I get the RS6 done I will be taking it to AAS in Newcastle. It's a bit of a trek and his waiting list is months long but his work is simply some of the best out there. He did an incredible job of my V6 MR2 that I had quite exacting requirements with regards to style/size/volume.

It was 18months ago now but I was quoted £1k and a 3 month wait till I could get the RS6 in for a cat back exhaust. I will get it there eventually.

Cheers, I popped in to get a price from Paddy at Motorspeed but have since picked up a second hand Miltek from a forum member. Should have these on shortly, stage 2 from Seditas and grin from ear to ear. :)

I'm finally getting around to changing the stock exhaust on my Plus (black tipped) and intend to go for Milltek non-res from my local specialist. I've seen various prices for fully fitted, most about a grand. Does that sound about right?

Any other suggestions/advice welcome!
