Gearbox refurb required....

Post by gedRS6 » Fri Nov 28, 2014 12:48 pm

Hey Guys,
well my trusty RS6is goosed. That gearbox problem that was happening intermittently has taken me out. Decided to take it in to get sorted along with a couple of sensors (which are now sorted and engine purring like a tiger) but the box is goosed. Turns out the transmission oil filter was solid with crud and I'm now in limp mode.....new box, refurbished box or get this one refurbished....where do i start ? help please. Its either that or i sell up with a hefty discount .....04 RS6 avant with 90k a owned from 12 months old, sad day indeed if i have to let it go, Any advice and contacts appreciated.....

IF it's a keeper, do the following:
- Take out TC and send to A.C.E.
- Remove VB and send to 517.
- Send GB to ZF UK for a repurposed unit.
- Reassemble GB.
- Put back in car.

Can't stomach the above, sell to a breaker or try your luck for someone taking it on for a hit on your wallet.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Hi, I had the cambelt, pulleys, etc done at Unit 20 this summer. While I was there one of the guys mentioned that they had started to use a local firm to recondition gearboxes with good results, only one problem to date which resulted in the box being fixed with no hassle. May be worth a call to check out the cost?

Regards,

Dom

That sucks, sorry to hear it.

AmD also have someone who reconditions the boxes, they did mine along with a load of other work but I wasn't impressed with how the car was re-assembled. They told me my turbos both needed replacing which was horse <beep>. Their remap was pants. While I was there they did the cambelt and aux belt... They fucked up the cambelt timing and the tensioner on the aux belt just failed so another thing mrc had to fix. The only good thing is the gearbox so far has done well.

I wish i'd gone to mrc and then split the box like bam says. Unit 20's refurb thing sounds promising though, do they have a warranty?

I got my gearbox done at Unit 20 last month. Great service.

Whilst it is in it is worth getting a few other bits and pieces done whilst the engine is out, like the Lambdas, EGRs, oil / water cooler, oil feed pipe to the turbos.

Worth getting a health check done whilst you are there to see if anything else needs doing, and may as well get it serviced too at the same time, as lots of the labour gets cancelled out as the car is already in bits.

Cheers man, thats exactly what they suggested...it has to happen. Other than this issue its a great car and i cant replace it until mid next year due to work contracts

Thanks for the heads up on the other thread and sorry to hear about your gearbox problems. Lots of sound advice being given from the wise folk.
Mine is going for service this month so will have it looked at but gearbox was serviced 10k ago so hopefully it should be alright... I hope

get MRC to rebuild it or get one from Audi and it will last you another 100k easily, if this one has lasted 90k you should be good. The other options of getting an ACE TC and 517 VB would only do you good if you plan on upgrading the power, otherwise the stock one is pretty good, i've just had mine serviced after it was replaced by Audi at 60k miles in 2010 and now is just under 149k miles, so for the last almost 90k it hasn't seen an oil change and i was very pleasantly surprised to find no metal shavings on the magnets nor any terribly burnt oil, in fact it looked quite well for its mileage and age.

MRC don't rebuild the box, neither do Unit20. They will send it somewhere. You either go Audi refurbished, send it to yank land or get a specialist over here to rebuild it.
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!
