Topping up rear output shaft oil.

Post by mavada » Wed Nov 26, 2014 4:00 pm

My car is in for its mot this friday, so would be a good idea to top up the rear output shaft oil (75W90 full Synthtic) when its on a bridge.
Anyone got a pic from where to drain it and location to put new oil in?
Unfortunately i dont have access to my Elsawin...

Cheers,

Mark

That's the rear diff, not the transfer box which is the one I believe you are talking about, Mav.

I did this the other day on mine. It's easy.

You just need to get the car in the air (I used ramps on the front and axle stands on the rear to get the car level) then crack the fill bolt. This is a bugger, but you can just get to it with a socket. It's angled in such a way that you can just miss the exhausts to get the bit in the bolt head. Mine was on very tight. Be careful not to burr the head of the bolt or you'll be in a world of hurt.

Thanks Ben,

Is it worth it to drain the old oil first or just top it up?

I just topped mine up. It took about 300ml IIRC.

Get a big syringe with a tube on it to fill it up.

Yes. Look at the ETKA diagram and you will recognise the plug.

I did mine not too long ago when I changed the seal. I've got a little 1ltr bottle with a pump and it makes things very easy - used it in my gearbox oil change too.
