Need some desperate help with vibrations when accelerating

Post by longman h » Tue Nov 04, 2014 9:43 pm

OK, so the car went into 4 Rings over in Dartford for a few bits to be replaced, mainly the G28, brake light switch, fuel pressure regulator and parking sensor. (Lazy I know). :nodder:

I picked the car up and all seemed to be fine however the next time I drove the car, I felt some vibrations when accelerating.

It seems to happen in any gear but only really when the car exceeds 30mph and it's making the driving experience pretty unbearable. As soon as you try and accelerate, the car starts to vibrate and the more throttle you apply, the worse it gets. Once you completely back off the throttle during acceleration, it stops entirely.

I took it down to 4 Rings again tonight so they could feel it themselves but after some time on the ramp, they weren't 100% sure what was causing it.
Apparently the front passenger drive shaft has a bit of play when moving to the left and right and they think it might be that but can't say for definite.

Has anyone experienced this in the past and if so, how was it cured?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

H

Could be a misfire. Got any codes?

Its something rotating for it to be constant. Tyres, Rims, Brake Discs, Drive Shafts. Does it pull in a direction if you let go of the wheel?

Does the vibration disappear over a certain speed?

Where do you feel it? Through the wheel or the whole car?

My new discs have just sorted my slight wobble.

I haven't noticed it pulling but will look at that more closely and report back. I haven't had the balls to go very fast but will try when I'm next on a fast bit of road.

Its the whole car that shakes and it's pretty bad.

There is no movement in the propshaft either.

Could it be a trans issue?

Could be lots of things!

I would check all my tyre pressures and start simple before thinking the worse.

Go faster. What's the worst thing that could happen....

Tyre pressures are OK.

I'll see what happens when I push on a bit.

Is the frequency of the vibrations linked to the vehicle speed or the engine speed? If you put it in a lower gear, does the frequency of the vibration increase?

It's more related to vehicle speed I think but when I was looking for this yesterday, it was hard to distinguish.

Is there anyone in Kent that fancies a meet up to see if they can put a finger on it? I'll buy the beers. :nodder:

Could you have lost a weight off a
wheel putting it out of balance?
That would alter with speed .

Cheers Pete but I think the vibrations would still carry on after coming off the throttle and wouldn't really have any direct correlation to the amount of throttle applied.

I swear it's to do with the drivetrain somewhere but just don't know where!! :bash:

so I had a bad bad vibration on my c5 rs6 on the front, there all the time at all speeds, but became noticeably worse at certain speeds.

in the end, after new wheels, tyres, tracking x3 and a lot of faffing around (all of the above needed to be done, so wanst too worried), i also got a set of front driveshafts, and had them swapped in. instant cure.

note that there should be some play on the gearbox side of both driveshafts iirc.

If it's not coming from the engine (you need to definitively eliminate that possibility) then it could be coming from the inner drive CV joint. In this case, I bet they pulled it off to do the G28 and have damaged / worsened it.
