Right bare with me here!
The car has developed a fault with gearbox
Seems to slip out of gear from 1st to 2nd.
No hunting, all other gears seem fine.
Tip works fine.
Haven't hoofed it so not sure if it will do anything different under hard acceleration or when it drops aggressively.

Any idea?

Long shot but cv boot is leaking, would this have any impact?

Is that the original box, how many miles, has it been serviced?
Sounds like you might need a new or refurbed box unfortunately. I guess you can try checking the level of the ATF, you might be very lucky but prepare yourself for the worst.

I got a refurbed box fitted by AMD, £3600 with a 1 year full warranty and another 2 years with parts covered and just labour to pay to remove/refit.

I'd also speak to MRC/unit20 depending on where you are and see what they can offer.

Leaking CV boot won't have any effect.

Located in Carlisle so options are limited!
Will get it into local garage and get them to read fault codes and go from there I guess.
If it is the box, will continuing to drive it do any additional damage?
I will need to save some pennies!

Do you mean it slips from 1st to 2nd like a slipping clutch if it was a manual?

Basically, when I go to pull away, it selects 1st no problem, accelerates normally the nwhen changing into 2nd it revs hard, clunks then goes into gear again.

Sounds like a clutch pack. Or could be a pressure problem: low ATF, bad solenoid, problem with valve body / ATF tranmission pipe, oil seal.

None of it's very good news, I'm afraid.

You could start by changing the ATF and checking the level, but chances are it won't help.

Not sure how good the local garage will be at diagnosing this...
Is the level easy to check?
Easy to drain?
How much does it take to refill?

I had exactly the same and changing the ATF made it better for a week and the went very quickly downhill. My advice is just to drive it very very gently until you can get it sorted, try to let off the throttle quick if it starts to slip so it doesn't do more damage when it bangs into gear.
You'll probably notice it's not so bad when cold and gets worse as the gearbox gets up to temperature?

Checking level/changing atf is messy, I'll see if I can find a link when I'm on lunch. It's all done from underneath with a drain plug that's recessed to where the fluid level should be. Basically involves unscrewing the drain plug while it's running and in gear and you top up until it overflows and repeat while running through the gears. Also gearbox needs to be cold before you start, not entirely sure how sensitive the fluid level is to temperature though.

Very. You need to get it all done before the ATF gets above 35 degrees ideally.

You have a clutch pack that's slipping.

Have you ever had the gearbox and filter serviced? A clogged filter and ancient fliud "may" cause clutch slip, just like worn friction material would. But it's a long shot and unlikely if the box has ever been serviced....
