2 din or not 2 din?

Post by AMGCoelho » Fri Apr 18, 2014 10:11 am

After much lurking in the bushes out here and fantasising I've finally got my unmolested RS6. Whoop whoop. I'm so in love.
New mummy on the block.
It's a 2004 (my favourite) model, black optics - so simple and beautiful and that raawr - aaaargh :biggrin3:

Problem is I'm a petrol head and a music junkie oh and I love gadgets.

However, being a nurse by trade means I haven't the faintest idea about the best options for connecting my iPod/phone wirelessly through the speakers.

Would really appreciate your suggestions.

Had a parrot in my previous car but preferably want to keep the dash clear, if I can help it.
Was thinking a new 2 din (currently have the original navigation plus that's useless) but don't need a satnav as have an all singing all dancing one already. But if it has a rear facing camera that would be cool.

I'm in Birmingham so any recommendations for mechanics to fit it would be great thanks.

So bored with the radio, can't wait to listen to some proper base drop.

Thank you and do forgive me - forum virgin, female, quick on the uptake tho..

I would leave the RNS-D and try a Dension GWL3AU2 for Bluetooth streaming. Check the sound quality though since I haven't tried this particular model.

Also, FON and rule 1.

I am going to bin the rns-d and put in an Alpine 925. Recon about £850 once all leads adapters and fitting kits are bought. It does have nav but is a car kit and dab and streams music via Bluetooth.

hmm

so I replaced the stock rns-d with an rns-e & factory bluetooth module, and i added an xcarlink ipod/streming bluetooth adaptor. cost around 900 euro all in.

for the money (around 120 stg from what I remember), the xcarlink is most definitely worth it from a functionality point of view and will give you bluetooth phone as well as streaming, and they do one that will fit straight onto the back of the rns-d as well.

the rns-e looks a lot more modern than the rns-d, and looks pretty similar to the 2/3g mmi that is in the newer A6 stuff, but it really depends on what you want to do. the rns-d is pretty similar functionality wise, and is much easier to run a rear camera to (it has a standard AV input) whereas you have to get a av input box for the rns-e which is more money again, but the rns-d does look dated a this point.

if you dont have the multi function wheel, then i would probably not care too much about staying OEM, and I would go down the road of a good 3rd party head unit the next time just because a: you dont have to install a bunch of extra stuff (bluetooth module, xcarlink etc etc) to get basic functionality, and the newer units (alpine, kenwood etc) look pretty cool too.

that said, if all you want is bluetooth streaming and ipod connectivity, then the rns-d with an xcarlink will work just fine!

so hope that helps

Mine has an RNS-D and an I-pod kit that was fitted by Audi.

There is a connector in the glovebox and you can operate at as a CD on the unit. Don't know what the kit is called though, sorry.

I still have RNS-D with the extra av inputs in the boot near the cd changer a mod you can do yourself for around £20-30. You can get any aftermarket bluetooth units to attach to this or cameras that you could fit on your rear window for a reversing camera. I'd save money this way as you'll need it when something 'unexpected' happens with your car...

I have the Xcarlink and while I think it's excellent for wired operation and bluetooth phonecalls, I find the music streaming isn't up to par. The quality isn't there. It smacks of 12bit conversion. Mine's a few years old. Maybe they've improved since. But that is why I recommended the Dension to the OP.

/edit: I see Xcarlink have a new one out. Maybe it's better for bluetooth streaming:

I wouldn't bet my life on it, though.

Sounds quality is crap though. I did this to begin with, but couldn't live with it. It's still wired in as an aux-in with a headphone jack socket discretely placed on the center console, but I never use it.

Or you could go completely mad and fit a Pioneer App Radio instead like me.

Seaneb how much was your pioneer if you don't mind me asking? Thanks
Thank you to everyone for your time.
Have I got an RNS-D and not a navigation plus?
So my options are
- xcarlink
- alpine or ken wood headset
- all singing all dancing

Would someone mind if we could have a quick chat before I went ahead?
Please post me your number and I'll call you and promise to keep it short.

Thanks a mil

:)

I think it was about £400 by the time I'd paid for all the bits and pieces. Very happy with it except for a faint whining noise that I'm yet to get round to sorting.

Your wining is the loom picking up engine noise. If you listen the pitch will change ! I presume the extra loom and adapter went by the blower under the glove box. Try moving the loom slightly. If you still get it you can get RCA filters. I have a slight noise and know I have a couple of filters somewhere that I will probably fit. I wend for the Pioneer 960 Dab was £850 ish and is a great bit if kit to do everything.

Thanks. I had a go at improving the earth but its not made a difference. I'll invest in some RCA filters then-its starting to grate on me now!!
