September Gearbox club

We should have a therapy group for this. I probably know the answer, but I could do with some empathy and reinforcement to give me the motivation to put the jerry can and lighter away :boohoo:

The gearbox started playing up right after I bought the car, I'd say 2-3 journeys after buying it I got some thumps and occasional slip. Holding off kick-down and using tip mode, as many others have documented, you'd never know it was an issue. The car has been particularly good the past few weeks and the few times I've driven it I have found aggressive starts off the lights and kickdown have even been fine. My wife has driven it daily on the school run with no issues.

Until this morning. Even a very sedate take-off from standstill results in massive slip and a thump into second - you almost feel like it's not going anywhere. Once it's in 2nd it's fine until you change back to 1st again. Putting it in tip it's still a bit slipping but alot better. The torque converter stuck/off code came up right away (this has come up fairly frequently the past 6 months), no other codes.

My thinking is that i should first get an oil and filter change on the gearbox and see if I can put off the full replacement till next year which would be a much better time. It's not had a gearbox service since July 2011. But there's a part of me thinking I should just suck it up and do the lot now, if I spend near enough 2k only to find the gearbox is still sh@gged I won't be in a position to put another 3.5k into the box and it's game over. But if I could get the lot done for 4k or close I could squeeze to it.

I think you've said it yourself - it needs rebuilding, not an oil and filter change.....

Yeah, I think the oil and filter change will be a waste of money.

If I were you I would first check the ATF level. This is easy and cheap. Low ATF would explain your symptoms. So would a shagged box, but let's be positive.

TBH it sounds like whoever sold you the car knew the box was on the way out.

I've done a bit of calling round, Dialynx are local (Swindon) and can check it out on Tuesday. They'll check it for leaks and check ATF levels, they did mention it's common to have these symptoms if it's got a leaky rear seal and lost a bit of oil. If it's low, it will be topped up and I'll see how it drives for a while before considering my options.

If it's not and that makes no difference... well I have to think hard. I was looking to replace the car next year as it's now taken up duties of a daily school run, so I could either look for an as-is 'project' sale and cut my losses and replace it now or send it to AMD or Unit20 etc and keep it a bit longer. Suspect it would be alot easier to sell running right with a warrantied gearbox and I'm not sure what to replace it with anyway. Kinda tempted by the B8 S4 although it will be the school run / family car so diesel is the sensible choice as my wife now drives it more than me.

I have an RS2 as well so keeping it as a toy is not an option unfortunately.

If the rear seal is leaking externally then this is NOT an ATF leak. The rear prop joint has its own chamber and has diff oil in it (around 1 litre). Unless the internal rear seal is leaking also - which I have never heard of - then this is not your problem. i.e. ATF into diff flange, then out through rear seal.

I thought Dialynx would have known this..........

...and a leaking rear seal can cause severe damage...

Yeah, that's worrying.

They are meant to be very good. Can you see any leaks underneath?

I had similar problems a couple of months ago thought it would be the big gear box pay out but endd up having a chat with a guy who works on Bentleys but also has a 6 he said try the oil change and try to get as much oil out as possible ie allow to run for 10 secs to force out as much as possible. I had this done cost around £300 but it's worked changes fine now.
It must be worth a go

Not reassuring, the fella mentioned he would talk to Kieth - perhaps he's not 100% on the RS6 box. But I'm going to have a go this weekend myself instead, if it goes tits up she'll be on a flatbed to Unit20...

Parts should arrive in the morning, £80 total so worth a gamble at that. I've got 8l of oil coming too. I will check the level first, if it seems low I'll be doing an oil and filter change and hope for the best. Wont be fun on axle stands, I'll let you know how I get on.

Any ideas where to get a decent siphon pump on the high st? We seem have every tool station or motorfactors in Swindon, hoping one will stock one.
