RNS-E install help in Sweden??

Hello,

Any folks from the western part of Sweden on this Forum? I live in Gothenburg and need assistance completing the install of an RNS-E from a factory RNS-D. My problem is that I recently moved here, and my Swedish is limited to whatever Google Translate burps out...which isn't very good. I've asked as many locals as I can, but no dice. I got a quote for 6000 SEK (almost 700 Euros) from the ONLY Audi dealership in the city to do this install, and I decided to pass for obvious reasons.

I've read various Symphony II to RNS-E install guides for various allroads/A6 C5 and RS6's, but I'm stuck, and would rather seek professional assistance.

Alternatively, I'd be willing to Paypal someone money if they're willing to Facetime or Skype with me and first 'undo' the damage i've inflicted, and troubleshoot.

Much appreciated

Fly me over and I'll do it for you :bigblink:
Have a looksy through Footlongs suppository or here might help. http://www.f1computers.force9.co.uk/Dow ... di/RNS.pdf
If you can't find what you need ask Chunky as he's very good at searching :bigwave:

I'll start looking for flights!

Thanks for that link - extremely detailed, and lots of pictures which is very helpful.

I'll try going through that pdf, but if there's an equivalent RNS-D to RNS-E step by step, it would be awesome! I keep seeing posts related to RNS-D to RNS-E swaps that essentially say, "RSN-D to E is dead simple, just skip steps 1-18, omit addendum D, swap this and swap this...." but no pics.

Somehow the KW coilover conversion and the control arm kit install I did seems to be way more straightforward than this! I'm obviously missing something.

Thanks for the FON. I'll try not to embarrass myself.

Thanks for putting up with me, but some Q's

---

Firstly, who is Footsy?

Second, 'suppository' *A suppository is a drug delivery system that is inserted into the rectum) - is this code for something else? It can't mean what Google tells me it means

Third - read through the .pdf entitled - Audi Symphony I to RNS-E Guide. To be clear, I'm looking for a RNS-D to RNS-E guide.

Here’s what I have attempted in chronological order:

1. Did a simple 'plug and play' using Kufatec adapters, Removed the factory RNS-D and noted that the RNS-E when installed, worked 95% as designed. Screen came on, GPS eventually worked fine, it accessed the CD changer in the back, played music from the SD cards, BUT the button lights did not illuminate, and unit did not turn off completely when key was removed (potentially draining battery).
2. removed the RNS-E and decided to try the most common approach and removed knee bolster to access the TMC module.
3. Removed the TMC module altogether, leaving the harness, but connecting the other 'coax' cables (seemed like the consensus was that TMC module was not needed anymore, since the RNS-E doesn’t need it.
4. disassembled the harness plug that connects to TMC module to access the Can hi and Can lo.
5. In the process, I stumbled across live wires that gave me a good shock...hope it didn't do any damage to other electronics. checked fuses, and all good.
6. Bit dazed, and not sure of what to do with the live wires in this now exposed harness, I thought I'd try the other approach and get the Can-Lo and High from behind the speedometer cluster.
7. Using vamp adapters, I tapped into the Can hi and lo on the grey harness from behind the speedo and ran wires to the Can hi and Lo wires in the adapter harness leading to the RNS-E
8. Now the unit does not power up. I can hear radio, so the unit is getting power, I think? Screen slightly flickers when pressing power button but screen will not actually turn on where it did previously. Buttons still do not illuminate.
9. Radio was getting annoying so I disconnected the unit entirely, and am now driving around with a non-functioning RNS-E plugged into the dash....

10. Registered an account on this forum, posted my S.O.S. and bribe (which no-one has taken me up on...I'm still offering the equivalent of $250 USD in whatever currency to the first taker!), and i'm back to reading guides RNS-E guides from Symphony I and Symphony II - trying to pick out the relevant data but obviously not having success.

So far so good, but it's not needed to remove or even touch the TMC module at all. Only thing you have to do now, is to get 2 wires from instrument clusters grey plug (wires 5 -CAN High and 6 - CAN Low )to kufatec harness (CAN-High and CAN-Low).

Ive upgraded also from RNS-D to RNS-E recently.

Greetings from Estonia : )

Why get CAN from the cluster when you can get it from the TMC module (input side)? No need to remove the instruments then.

Maybe, but when i was looking DIY guides, then there was only one solution to get real CAN signal and that was from instrument cluster. Its not so hard to remove, maybe even easier than TMC ?

Do you also have RNS-E and how did you get CAN?

** Thread resurrection alert...!! **
Does anyone know of a good reason why you can't just get the CAN High and Low feeds from the old 26-pin connector that used to go into the RNS-D (and which becomes obsolete during the upgrade to RNS-E)?

The 26-pin connector that looks like this:
Image

It just seems like less hassle than taking additional panels off, tapping into the instrument cluster/TMC module, etc. (not that it's massively difficult or time consuming to do), when there's a connector already sitting there by the HU. :bash:

From the wiring diagrams I've seen, you can get Infotainment CAN-H from pin 13 and CAN-L from pin 26 (i.e. the outermost 2 pins from the 26-pin connector).
Connect these to pins 9 and 10 respectively of the EXT Control Connector in the RNS-E QuadLock and you're done... in theory.

...or am I missing something?

It's not the same protocol. The car can't talk directly to the RNS-D. The TMC/Canbus module does the translation. They're both CAN networks but the messages are incompatible. Don't know why they did it the way.

RNS-E talks directly to the car so you need to tap into the CANbus upstream of the TMC module.

Fair enough! Thanks Ben. Did seem a bit too simple! :)

So the next question would be... do you cut the red wire or the blue wire...?
(or, rather, which from these 6 are CAN high & low!?)Image
I would guess the brown and red/yellow, but only a guess at this stage and wouldn't know which is which! :bash:
