What is it about cars and when one thing goes, it's quickly followed by another. As per my previous post, I have boost problems,which you guys have kindly offered words of wisdom on, and will be plugged into Vagcom on Friday, doing discs and pads Saturday blah blah My new problem (which doesn't look good at all) I am now losing a little water from my expansion tank, now what is more puzzling is the car is not leaking, now my car is mis-firing on start up for about 15 secs then it clears and idles properly, my mate who knows a little more than me regards cars thinks it could possibly be a little water egress in the fuel lines on start up, and takes 10-15 secs to burn away then the fuel fires properly , and when she is run is sweet as a nut, bar my little boost problem which hopefully is the N75. However he did say that it may be the first sign of the head going, which ( I dropped a chocolate log at btw). I have checked the expansion tank, and there is no sign of contamination, |I have also checked the oil, which looks very health. No white smoke at all from Exhaust, so I'm a little lost as to what this is.

Can't see how water would get into the fuel lines. It is starting to sound like a head gasket. Pull the plugs and have a look inside the bores to see if there's any sign of water seepage after the car has been standing for a while.

Are there any bubbles in the expansion tank when the engine is running (don't do this with the engine hot)?

Also, pull up your water temp on the air con and see what it's doing.

Turned out to be head gasket.

Sadly sounds like head gasket. Everything think Shopp says above is bang on (as always!)
Your friend who mentioned the fuel issue, does he like a drink or smoke so interesting stuff??

I had exactly the same symthoms as you describe... Rough idle and misfire during startup..ref link Shop posted.

The one thing i did which nailed it was to go in with camera through the sparkplug entry and looked inside the cylinder when car had been left over night. One cylinder had a wet surface while all others was completely dry. Conclution was that Head gasket had leakage at a certain temperature which caused water ingress while cooling down.

Changed the Head gasket and problem fixed...requires an engine pull though

Guys, it's been mentioned to me by 3 different people now with regards the HG on it's way out, going from 3 years problem free, to all this in one go, is not a good relationship to be having, feck knows how much this is going to cost for the engine out and heads fixed?? Anyone got an idea of costs on this???

Thanks Shop and RS6Nor, read the entirety of the link you kindly supplied, and guys your making a grown man cry, I may have to sell her for spares at this rate, Come the end of the weekend I will have spent close to £2k on her, and now whatever the Heads are going to cost??? Not really going to be worth it is it, and the problem with regards buying another 6 is she may be in the same condition as mine currently after a few months......Feck Feck Feck Feck Feck.

No i get the whole 3 year problem free, and last year when she went in and got her timing belts and tensioners etc done, the tech said that it was one of the best 6's he had ever seen, which was comforting, the gentleman that had the car prior to me, kept her for 7 years, and done absolutely everything, OIL change every 2k miles, gearbox fluid change every 5k miles, etc etc. Grizz will know the car, as Unit 20 carried out most of the work, then I think the previous owner moved and went to a chap Paul Coy or Goy racing, and everything done as previously. So She has been very well looked after. Going on everyones comments I presume the engine coming out and heads and gaskets changed I can expect to pay £3-4k, is this high or low can anyone help me out on this approx, as I fear I am going to have to break this one to the wife as gently as I possible can. It should be a third of that to drop the engine, pulling the heads and getting them skimmed ain't too pricey. Grizz should tell it to you straight. You could always ring around and ask for booktime on all of the jobs required, just to keep him honest, like.

Without getting the Elsawin disc out I was wondering if its an absolute must to take the engine out to pull the heads off and replace the head gaskets! Or is there a complication with access to the ancillaries and other bolt on items?

If its anything like the RR Sport i wouldn't be surprised. You have to take the body off the chassis to replace a turbo due to access issues which is shocking on a vehicle the size of a Japanese Apartment but understandable in a family supercar.

Park the car up and DON'T use it as you could damage the heads. Phone Grizzle up and have a word with him, he has done a few head gaskets on these so should be able to give you a very good idea of price/ time. It is a pain in the nut sack to remove the rocker covers on these without an engine drop so I assume the engine will have to be removed or dropped to remove the heads.
If I were you I would break the news while tacking the wife from behind doing the fish hook! She will go mental as though you've just told her you have been sleeping with her sister and fight like a raging bull.
