airconditioning compressor whine?

In the last few weeks a fairly significant whining noise has started emanating from the front of the car. Going on a couple of old threads, I'm suspecting airconditioning compressor. Whine stops when the a/c is turned off; and sounds like a small jet turbine starting about 10-15s after the engine is started (a/c is on auto). The volume of the whine varies with engine revs, being at its peak at around 1800rpm, give or take.

Is there anything else linked to the a/c which could also whine? And if a/c compressor, does this mean eventual failure? a/c seems to be working as normal (for some definition of working/normal  ).

Thanks Grizz, I'll check it. Hopefully nothing more serious than that.

I'd try for a re-gas before pulling the pump apart.

If an air con system is low on gas, it will start to transmit noises from the pump through the system and into the car.

When I used to work for Porsche, this was a common complaint and a re-gas always fixed it.

I've just re-gassed my RS6 and there wasn't enough gas in the bottle to fill it completely and now I have a slightly noisy (whine) system where as before pulling it apart, I didn't.

I'll be re-gassing it as soon as we get another bottle at work.

How many grams of gas does the RS6 take? I will be doing mine in a few weeks but haven't checked into how much gas they need. Will need to check there is enough in the unit before I bring it home!
Cheers muchly
