Gearbox locked in gear

Post by RS6MTM » Fri May 31, 2013 8:55 pm

As Ive mentioned in previous threads, my gearbox is 'non functioning' at the minute and I have parked the car in the garage. I tried to move it tonight but it is seized solid. I tried towing it out and it will not move. Is there any way I can disengage it from gear so it can be freely pushed, and dragged onto a recovery lorry when its going to get repaired??

The car has been driven into the garage but will not move backwards, to come back out.

Suggestions please!

Did you put the key in and turn the ignition on before trying to move the gear lever? Also foot on brake pedal?

Yes, car started, placed in N, R - no difference. Doesn't move wherever the gear lever is. She's locked solid

is it possible to get around the car in your garage?
Now you cant do much, have it scanned with Vagcom...

Ive ran it through Vag Com. Error Code P0370 - Incorrect Gear Ratio. This is a generic code which mean absolutely nothing to specify the exact problem. I have about 1 foot space around the car in the garage. It will be lifted by the repair company in a couple of weeks but right now its going nowhere!

they usually have "sleds" they wedge under the tires to drag and slide cars....

Yeah, gear lever moves.

Car doesn't

She will move forward in Limp mode but not in reverse. Forward is no good to me - another 1ft and she'll be through the back wall of the garage!

If you can move the car forward, you should be able to pull it backwards.

I have the car linked to the A6 Avant last night and tried to pull it in reverse - no go. I don't want to do damage but there has to be a way of dis-engaging the gearbox so it can be freely moved forward and back?? When the recovery company comes to lift the car, I want to be sure that they'll be able to take it

You could try this...

Loosen the 10mm retaining nut on the negative battery cable clamp.
Slide the clamp off the battery terminal.
Wait 15 minutes. Then, reconnect the battery cable. This will reset the ECU (electronic control module) and the TCM (transmission control module).

(be sure youve got the code from the radio)

I don't understand why the car won't pull back. I can't picture mechanically what is stopping it. You're not trying to pull it with the engine running, are you?

If you really can't move it then you'll have to uncouple the front drive shafts and the prop shaft.

Just to make completely sure:

1. When you try to pull the car back, you're in gear (D or R or whatever)?
2. Handbrake / footbrake isn't on? Who's in the driver seat?
3. Is the box in limp mode (PNRDS all lit up)?
4. If not does the dash display correspond to what gear you select with the lever?

Last night when I tried to move the car, I placed it into N and tried - no go. Then I placed it into R and tried - no go. So I started the car and placed it in N - no go. And the same again with R - no go. The box goes into limp mode if you rev hard for 5 seconds and then it will engage in 5th gear. I cant let that happen, because if it does, the car will be through the back wall of the garage! (There is no room left in front of the car for forward movement.) At all times during these efforts, I set my Dad in the drivers seat, and I drove the tow car.

I will disconnect the battery to see if that makes any difference - you say 15 minutes for the ECU reset but I thought on this car it was a 3 hour reset?

Disconnecting the battery won't make any difference, but if it amuses you to try then go ahead.

When the box isn't in limp mode, can you answer n°4 above please?
