The RS6 project including 5HP24 A transmission rebuild SOLD

Most of you will have read my first post after I inspected a 2003 RS6 Avant that needed a lot of work.

http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 47#p595947

Well I made a low offer and after about a month, the trade came back to me and accepted it.

I've driven it for a week (with the trans in limp) and now have taken a couple of days to carefully pull the engine and trans to fix it.

Image

I did start trying to remove the trans without dropping the engine. I got as far as managing to remove the downpipes and then realised that the right hand turbo had to come off so figured that it'd be easier to just drop the lot!

Image

Looking at the trans, it was manufactured Feb 2010... didn't last long did it!

From driving it, not only was it failing in 1-4th gear but it was starting to slip in 5th too. The oil stinks of burnt friction material so I'll be interested to get into it and see what's failed.

Chester Transmissions will be supplying the parts - probably a kit. I'll post up info on this as I go along.

A few questions...

It had the following errors when I inspected it:

17985 - Right Engine mount - open circuit

17831 - Secondary Air Injection System Bank 1, Insufficient flow

17819 - Secondary Air Injection System Bank 2, Insufficient flow

17865 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 2, open or short to Plus - Intermittent

Now... I cleared the faults and then drove it for a week.

The only one that came back was the engine mount and this is a permanent fault so it needs an engine mount.

The exhaust gas temp sensor 2 hasn't shown up since but I'm in the right area to change it. I do know that it's possible to change these with the engine in too though. Oh... which side is Gas Temp Sensor 2?

Next... the exhaust gas re-circulation pump is full of water! Yes you heard it right... Water. I can't work out how or why. I'd imagine that this is the reason for the above faults! Has anyone ever heard of this before?

The transmission was fitted at an Audi dealership. Whoever fitted it didn't do a great job as they've snapped a gearbox mount bolt and left one of the trans to engine M12 bolts loose... as in finger tight!

I'd imagine it'll be the same person who has stripped a couple of bolts here and there too.

That's all for the moment but I'll be pulling the trans apart next week and I'll take photos as I go.

Oh, just so this is clear from the off. This is my car, I'm doing this my way and not by the book. If it's wrong... never mind. If I screw up it's my problem. I'm not advertising for work, I don't want to do this on anyone else's car and I can completely understand if someone says "you're not supposed to do it that way... !"

Good that's out of the way!

Fair play to you mate! Are you going to gutt the downpipes while they are off and get it re-mapped?

Jees, you're sounding like a broken record.
I'm going to say £6k.

Lol, sorry Footlong, that won't be going up on the forum

Right now I don't want to sell the car but things change and that kind of information can jeopardise a future sale. For that reason alone, that won't get published. To give you some idea, it was more that the general consensus on the forum and less than the trader wanted.

Re Cats, I need the car to pass an MOT easily each year and this is worth more than an extra 20 horsepower

Location? There aren't too many businesses that have both Porsches and Monaros in the same place. I run a business under the same roof, also helping out with diagnostics and modifications from time to time.

That is one of the companies where I work but they have nothing to do with the work carried out on this car or views that I express. :-)

Fair enough, your in good company then! Obviously well versed with cars to do what your doing is all I will say. I will play with mine but not to that degree.

RS2 is a legend, in his short time in the '8 world he documented loads of useful fixes/mods, really knows his stuff and this thread is going to be especially good as he's going to take the gearbox apart and repair it himself, not just send it off to a refurb company. Good to have you on 246.

Wow, er thanks Amar. I think you're putting me on a pedestal though. I'm just taking things to pieces and putting them back together

I do believe in sharing knowledge so if others gain from this thread, it's worth doing :-)

i've had the engine/gearbox out as well couple of months ago for, of course, the exact same reason :), while at it i've also changed the below items, in order to avoid other future labor costs:

O2 sensors, EGT sensors, Temperature sensor, Valve cover gaskets plus all other gaskets which can't be changed without removing the engine, turbo gaskets, intercooler hoses, exhaust/intake gaskets, all 3 engine mounts and many other bits that looked like they've had enough...

If you have no records of the O2 and EGT sensors have had been changed, get them replaced as it's a PITA to change it with the engine on!

It's good that you can do it yourself, you can take it slowly and make sure you get everything done they way you want it!

Good luck!!!
