Well I made a low offer and after about a month, the trade came back to me and accepted it.
I've driven it for a week (with the trans in limp) and now have taken a couple of days to carefully pull the engine and trans to fix it.

I did start trying to remove the trans without dropping the engine. I got as far as managing to remove the downpipes and then realised that the right hand turbo had to come off so figured that it'd be easier to just drop the lot!

Looking at the trans, it was manufactured Feb 2010... didn't last long did it!
From driving it, not only was it failing in 1-4th gear but it was starting to slip in 5th too. The oil stinks of burnt friction material so I'll be interested to get into it and see what's failed.
Chester Transmissions will be supplying the parts - probably a kit. I'll post up info on this as I go along.
A few questions...
It had the following errors when I inspected it:
17985 - Right Engine mount - open circuit
17831 - Secondary Air Injection System Bank 1, Insufficient flow
17819 - Secondary Air Injection System Bank 2, Insufficient flow
17865 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 2, open or short to Plus - Intermittent
Now... I cleared the faults and then drove it for a week.
The only one that came back was the engine mount and this is a permanent fault so it needs an engine mount.
The exhaust gas temp sensor 2 hasn't shown up since but I'm in the right area to change it. I do know that it's possible to change these with the engine in too though. Oh... which side is Gas Temp Sensor 2?
Next... the exhaust gas re-circulation pump is full of water! Yes you heard it right... Water. I can't work out how or why. I'd imagine that this is the reason for the above faults! Has anyone ever heard of this before?
The transmission was fitted at an Audi dealership. Whoever fitted it didn't do a great job as they've snapped a gearbox mount bolt and left one of the trans to engine M12 bolts loose... as in finger tight!
I'd imagine it'll be the same person who has stripped a couple of bolts here and there too.
That's all for the moment but I'll be pulling the trans apart next week and I'll take photos as I go.
Oh, just so this is clear from the off. This is my car, I'm doing this my way and not by the book. If it's wrong... never mind. If I screw up it's my problem. I'm not advertising for work, I don't want to do this on anyone else's car and I can completely understand if someone says "you're not supposed to do it that way... !"
Good that's out of the way!
