Airbag dash light

Post by Cheeseboytim » Tue Mar 05, 2013 7:43 pm

Hi all, first off I've been through the searches and all they've turned up was intermittent lights with passengers and a passenger airbag igniter resistance too high.

Now to my issue, driving home from work (about 20 mins into the journey), i just happened to be checking the DIS and noticed that the airbag light was up on the dash. I'm pretty sure it wasn't there from start up as i normally let the car warm for a minute or two before leaving (old habit) so tend to look about a bit. As far as i can think there was nothing to cause this, no bumps as i was on fairly new roads at a slow pace due to traffic, no sudden braking or accelerating. have turned the car on and off a few times and it still stays on, any help or info would be great!

Tim.

You need something like VCDS to turn the light off, a scan will tell you what made the light come on in the first place, this will need to be fixed to stop it coming on again though.

Do the RS6 suffer with dodgy airbag plugs on the seats like many other VAG vehicles?

Think there is a fellow rs6er down in Bristol with VCDS, you could do with a scan bring carried out.

i'm trying a friend at the moment but won't be until tomorrow at work, just want to check that there isn't any reason the car should not be driven (I.E. airbags going off and murdering me while i'm least expecting it!). Who else is down Bristol way?

The cars are getting to the age where the airbags will start to perish and need replacing, but it could be a simple fix. You need a Vagcom to figure out what's going on.

No risk of them going off unexpectedly. The worst that might happen is that the defective one won't fire.

There are a couple on here down Bristle way. Can't remember who offhand.

A friend at work has bought his VCDS into work and we will be going out to check this afternoon. Glad to hear that it shouldn't go off unexpectedly was giving the shifty looks all the way in this morning! Now just see what codes pop up and hope nothing major is lurking is lurking in there as well.

Maximo; Cheers its good to know someone close by. Where abouts do you take yours for servicing repairs etc?

Afternoon Cheeseboy.

I'm Bristol-based (but don't have Vagcom - sorry!).

I take mine to the Audi Stealers at Cribbs for the MOT (pretty competitively priced last time, and you get coffee and biscuits) but all other servicing duties are now looked after by MRC in Banbury.
A bit of travelling from Bristol and I'm lucky as the in-laws live in the Cotswolds so can combine the servicing with earning some brownie points by visiting the in-laws!

Like Chris mine goes to MRC in Banbury, it's not a bad run up and they have Wi-Fi so it's possible to work from there if your able to do that sort of stuff. If you don't want to travel all that way then the guys a Dialynx will know doubt be able to help with servicing, I've used them recently for a couple of things and quite pleased with them. Keith seems to be a fountain of knowledge and willing to chat away to you.

I wonder if it's time for a local meet as there seems to be a few of us in this part of the country now?

Hmmmm...this happened to me a few months back...when any dash warnings comes on it really should be accompanied by a massive £ sign as well ...that's the first thing that goes thru your mind...I solved mine by grabbing hold of the horn (Ooer madam) section and pulling it towards me...light went out and never came back on...it's yahoo engineering for sure...but it worked...got to be worth a try

Alright the results are in! first of all checked for any main faults and all that came up was a p1573 left engine mount solenoid mis-communication. then checking the airbag part it turned out to be; 00588 airbag igniter driver side (n95) intermittent. Cleared all codes etc and the light hasnt reappeared. having done some checking up seems to be fairly common vag fault to do with the clockspring or harness getting worn from steering motions. As its all cleared now im going to leave it, but if it reappears i may just ring the warranty and see what they say!

Ah right ive known about mrc but always deemed it a little far (might move a relative over there for good measure tho), i drive past cribbs every day as i work in filton so that could be an option. Dialynx? Never heard of them before. I would be up for a meet, get to put names to faces (i lurked here long before signing up and taking the plunge).

Never to far when you have an RS6 :D

Dialynx are based in Swindon and are known for doing a lot of work on the original Quattro, they've also build a few prototypes. I still use MRC though as they always have lots of RS6's in the workshop getting various bit's done when I'm there. So they known them inside out.

Yes putting faces to names is always a good thing, so which side of Bristol are you from?

It's a small place alright, you can tell that by some of the locals :/

Well the light has stayed off so far and as of just now all faults codes have remained in hiding. Now the waiting game!
