Which coilover kit? & more DRC woe!!
Re: Which coilover kit? & more DRC woe!!
So am I right that the SS+ kit on a B7 would be the same or similair to the sports set up on a c5 Plus? If so that makes it the same ride as on Pss9's.... There is a little time gap for me owning the the two cars but if anything the SS+ seemed a little harsher but of course its a different car and weight..... Anyone argue or have additional input on this?? If thats the case then only real difference we are looking at is going to be parts reliability... of course! Weighing up out of warranty DRC replacement costs against adding new coilvers when the time comes in a recession might be the way....if ever

Re: Which coilover kit? & more DRC woe!!
Yep - there are a few of us out here who like the fact you can have a compliant ride on lumpy stuff, with added stiffness for the bends etc!!I believe there is one or two fans still about.....
Remember that not only have you got the 2 year parts warranty on DRC, but if you get your MOT done by Audi there is a courtesy MOT warranty available - a leaking DRC unit would be covered as it would be a cause of MOT failure. So with a little finesse of timing you can get a three year warranty on your DRC for free.
Try getting that on your coilies!!

Re: Which coilover kit? & more DRC woe!!
Question: how many threads are on this forum regarding the topic of failed DRC? For the sake of fairness, how many threads are on this forum about failed coilover kits?
I'll drive past you while eating a sandwich every time if it meant 60,000 - 80,000miles of worry-free and non-maintenance coilover ownership. I've driven/owned both DRC and coils, and for me, the Billie coilovers a are logical win every single time.

Re: Which coilover kit? & more DRC woe!!
I know I'm not going to convince you Bam - and I have no desire/reason to do so!!
At a rough guess I reckon probably between 5 to 10 times as many threads on DRC woes as coily woes - maybe even more.
However two things that I've observed over the past year of my 5 years on here:
- the DRC failure threads have become fewer - and one factor is that the DRC units are now much more robust
- we are now getting fairly regular threads about harsh coilies, and some failures - not a lot, but they are starting - the reasons being partly because the coilies are starting to rack up the miles and failures are starting to occur.
I haven't checked recently, but I reckon if one checked Autotrader ads probably 80%+ are still on DRC.
What we have on here are the modding enthusiasts who like to "improve" their cars by adding coilies, tuning, exhausts etc - they are also probably harder drivers than the original target market who want to exploit more of the car's performance than the average buyer when new.
I always go back to the guys who originally conceived our beasts - if they could have got the performance/ride compromise they wanted from coilies they would have gone that route - it would be much cheaper and simpler. They went with DRC to achieve more - it may have been badly executed in terms of reliability, but the intent and design is for a better solution.
As you say "for you, coilies are a logical win every time" - and that's the beauty of the beasts - they can have two different solutions to suit our different needs!
Can't say fairer than that

I just fitted pss9 and well happy with it not to hard and great handling. Makes you see how rubbish the drc is.

I spoke to a Master Technician and more suprisingly an experienced well respeced Service Manager yesterday arguably best qualified on this part of the car in the UK, who suggested he had never seen a coilover kit that was set up or rode correctly on a RS 6

Yes modded cars are great and I love some of the examples on here and if thats your thing great but they dont add value to the car and they def dont make life any easier or cheaper to run one of these fine beasts. You need to be lucky a lot thats all.

Re: Which coilover kit? & more DRC woe!!
Two C5 RS6's sit side-by-side, freshly serviced and tanks full to the gunnels with 101RON. They're identical cars except for one has a set of bedded PSS9s and the other has working DRC (you might want to add ARBs given the following information). The task ahead is to drive one of these cars to the Transfăgărășan, give it death and drive it back. It's the trip of a lifetime and one chance only, which car would you pick?
