Yes you are correct not the dreaded Fiat 500 again 😂 I told her I had it booked in regarding the F125 switch, straight away what’s that going to cost ? Like it’s her purse that’s being opened haha 😆 wait till I mention the exhaust is being done , in the future thinking of new alloys, bits and bobs inside, she doesn’t understand this is a investment to me, love driving her never gets boring to her it’s just a car, definitely getting the tyres everyone has mentioned, going to order the badge now for the steering wheel, and ideas for new floor mats 😂 hopefully will get it just the way I want it, at least your nearly there now

Lander. No mate. After using gliptone all I can smell is the leather.
A long time ago I used to get a whiff of vpower on cold start. But not had that for a long time.
The interior is just a very nice place to be.

That’s the smell I’m getting at the minute, any advise welcome, also I pm Steve the other day regarding smoke/steam coming from one of my exhaust pipes, only happens every now and then I see it through my rear view mirror, luckily the windows are not tinted, our I wouldn’t have noticed it to be fair

Normally cam cover gaskets cause this. Lefthand one is easy righthand one awkward but doable. Audi dealer will probably want the engine out :audibash: :audibash: :audibash:

Usually the smell is because of oil on the manifolds, from the cover gaskets. Though my recent issue had the same symptoms but the oil was coming from the rubber cam plug at the rear of the driver's side head (RHD). The drip tracked its way to the nearest valve cover bolt and made it look like the cover. Use of an inspection mirror is needed to check this.
Plug can be replaced with engine in, SAI valve and assembly needs to be removed and held out the way. Flat head screwdriver gets the plug out and is used to lever new one back in, plug is still available.

Note that the leak was really only produced after heavy acceleration from slow speeds or stand still, e.g. it wouldn't happen after motorway driving. Dunno if it was caused by a oil moving to the back of the valve cover or somehow the pressure in the head was temporarily high enough to push the oil passed the failed/failing plug.

Cheers bilko1 and also lander regarding your advise reference what this is, she’s in at Unit 20 on the 20th, for the F125 switch to be fixed, mentioned on the phone to Martin about a oil leak, will mention the smell etc when I get down there hopefully will help get the proper diagnosis, Car drives perfect apart from these little problems, will get it eventually to the standard, that all yours are currently at one day 😂 then something else will happen, what does grizz charge for a full service and does he carry out MOTs ? For future ref thanks again Barry

Many many thanks guys.
Very useful info.
Need to check out the cam covers again (all round them).
And the rubber cam cover plug. I presume there are two plugs ( one on each bank ).
On mine the leak is on near side. So will pay special attention to that side. If we do pinpoint the problem.
Repeat the remedial action to the offside.
Thanks again.
Ps definitely no smell of smoke in the cabin.
I guess it’s a case of working through all the possibilities until we hit the right one.

Lander. Do you have part no for the plug.
Can you confirm 1 plug each side.
Is the plug located in the cam cover
At the moment I think these plugs are a priority followed by cam cover gaskets.
Will discuss both options with Grizz.
Thank you mate.

Pps. Just remembered I had a weird smell in the cabin about two / three years ago like exhaust gas smell on initial start up. Cannot recall if it went in for diagnosis or if it just disappeared.
IIRC it just vanished.
Haven’t had it since and still don’t have it.

Some people just don’t get our passion / obsession!

Steve, if you edit your posts, the chances are that people won't know and won't go back and read it.

Funny how they don’t moan about the car when they want to go somewhere.
Holidays shopping etc
Am I really the only “SELFISH” member on here.
And all of a sudden “my” car became “our”car

I did slip up a few years ago though.
During a heated conversation I got. You think more of the car than you do of me.
I regret my response which was. Of course I do I spend more money on the car than I do on you.
Just came out in the heat of the moment.
I regretted it as soon as I said it.
I thought I was being comical. But it wasn’t received that way.
I am constantly being reminded.

Shopp ok mate will do.

Steve,
I feel your pain.
So frustrating, both the car and the domestic grief that goes with it.
But you love the car and despite the cost and hassle ( enjoy the drive to Neston) it's still probably cheaper than many cars in terms of total cost, most of which can't do nearly as much as ours (especially avants ).
Keep the faith, Grizz & Lee will get to the bottom of it.
Bit drastic cancelling the golf and footie.

Hi ric. Thanks for the message. Yes I know IT WILL get sorted. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
I like landers recommendations so will follow that course of action in the very near future.
Unless grizz tells me otherwise.
Re the footie and golf. Something had to go. And it wasn’t going to be the upkeep of the 6.
Other than this small leak Christine is amazing.
So in a way I am very fortunate that my problems are now trivial. But I like perfection. Now I know I have a issue. It’s just got to get sorted.
I don’t think I will ever get perfection but I will get her as close as I can.
After all the car is 18 years old. Although you wouldn’t think so in looks and drive ability.
I really do think these cars warrant being looked after.
