Does it sound a bit like a hair dryer? If it does it will be the secondary air pump.

The secondary air pump only operates for the first 30-45 seconds on a "cold" start and then it should shut down. In the engine bay look to the big black plastic cylinder on the drivers side near the back next to the wing, thats the pump, if it's vibrating and making noise after say 1 minute then thats an issue.

Thanks for the responses guys - I did have a look at the secondary air pump and it does seem to be vibrating slightly, plus I noticed a bit of water sitting on top of the connector plug. Will see if unplugging, cleaning and reconnecting it makes any difference.

I do have an mp3 file of the noise but this extension isn't permitted by the site unfortunately.

So I understand the SAP isn't really necessary and can be disconnected/mapped out, or would it be better to get another one in there for the MOT?

Am still a bit miffed at the garage for letting me take it away like this. When I first got the car it sounded great and after being at the garage (over a month) it now has this rather unpleasant noise. The engine has been removed/dropped twice now according to them. Coincidence?

Sorry for the delay but I've finally got it back.

It turned out to be the fibrous sump filter which was 4mm too deep causing the oil to cavitate against the filter material. The initial part they fitted was correct for the chassis number but there are various depths available and the replacement has cured all noises, including one that sounded like a failing starter motor.

I can now hear the engine for the first time in ages :D

Had the rear discs, pads and calipers replaced too.

MOT the other day - failed on headlights. Specifically "Headlamp cleaning device inoperative" (both sides) and "Headlamp aim too high" (again, both.)

I assume this relates to the little aliens that pop up from the bumper? Never knew they existed until now and obviously never used them. Any suggestions on how to fix them or do they need replacing?

As for adjusting the aim - is this possible or are they (supposed to be) automatic?

Cheers!

You adjust them just like any other headlight, but you have to tell the car that it is level first. You need a Vagcom to do this.

Or you can assume that it was done correctly last time and adjust the headlights in the usual way. Chances are you'll get away with it.

Maybe your V11 headlight washer pump is dead. Or maybe disconnected by the DPO. It is a terrible waste of washer fluid, after all.

The levelling arm attached to the suspension arm might be borked.
