Elise based cars are stunning on track even in pure stock form.
I'm not a fan of caterham cars really - I find the balance slightly wrong for my driving style.
I'm biased (5 Elise's so far) but I test drove several other track cars (xbow, atom 2&3, caterham r500) and all have their charms but I much preferred the heavier, less powerful 211 as as a package was simply so much better than the others.
That being said my all time favourite Elise is the s2 sport 190. Out of the box you've got great suspension, wheels and tyres with all the must haves for decent track work (harnesses, brakes, tougher roll bar etc) along with at least 196 bhp giving around 260bhp/tonne. None to shabby. The key part with this car (and mainly pre 2004) is that the rover engine is light and very easy to maintain DIY. It also makes a good candidate for conversions - Audi and Honda packages are available with most giving 330bhp taking you into bonkers territory.

There's not a lot really between the s1 and s2 - the s2 is more polished with a much easier roof and generally a little better out together but really just a styling change.

Oh, Don't get an s1 with the mmc brakes - they are not up to track work.

On the right track ey are a joy and you don't notice the power. Sure, go to Silverstone arena gp and it's frustrating (even in the 211) but somewhere a bit tight and twisty like oulton and brands they really do show how 'barge like' modern cars have become.

Agree on the Lotii S1s & S2s, amazing car but they hold ridiculous values and were out of my price point for a 1st trackcar.
Shop's budget would cover him for a Lotus. Somehow I see him throwing a Ford Cosworth motor in it, I don't know why, it's just a vision I have... strange, he could despise all things Ford for all I know.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Nah, I had a long love affair with Fords. Would happily own a Focus ST and used to dream of a Cossie. First fast car I ever went in was a XR4x4 Twin Turbo (Turbo Technics). That's when I realised that cars could be properly fast.

Still, engine transplants are all sorts of trouble and I was looking for more of a plug and play kinda track toy.

Honda S2000,
Porsche 944 S2,
Smart Four Two with bike engine, mental!!!
RX 7 (how much time do you want to spend rebuilding it), or get one with an LS conversion.
Then as mentioned all the various caterfields, depending on how tall you are there will be one that fits you.
Bmw E36 m3s.
Just depends on how much time you are prepared to spent maintaining it, versus how fast you want to go.
2003 RS6 Avant, non res Miltek, 3" catless dps, wagners, MRC air filters, 044 fuel pump, MRC custom remap, TCU remap, 566ps, 812nm, pss9 coilovers, hotchkis rollbars, Recaro CSs, 390mm front discs, hi-spec 4 pot rear calipers.

All I saw was Elise and stopped there. Ben, have you tried fitting in one? I tried one years ago and got straight out, was too small for me and we are similar heights at least.

I've been a passenger in a S1. I don't remember it being too cramped, but it was a while ago.

Maybe I'd better go and try one out. There's that subaru and lotus place in Surrey that's always got loads. Some good roads round there, too.

I might have been a bit of a tubby chap when I last tried one but it was a good few years ago, before I reached whale proportions.
