I think that is effectively the case. Doug's remark to me when it was donne was along the lines that they quite frequently run the cars with just the downpipes - and they are deafening. His comment on Bam's set up was that it seemed even louder - ie the pipes are indeed acting as an amplifier. And no reason why not - after all thats the principle behind every kind of brass instrument!

The pipes wouldn't look out of place on a scaffolding contract.

Amar, it's not the kind of noise you 'enjoy' but it is one of those noises, that, not so much tickles your petrolhead funny bone but smashes it repeatedly with a ball-peen hammer. It just makes you laugh uncontrollably and then leaves a confused smile on your face. I will find a way to keep it.
