Good evening Mr Moocher. The most common problem with the RS4 gearbox is 1st gear synchro going west, but it does rather depend on how its been driven and whether a shortshift has been fitted and incorrectly set up. I'm not sure whether its a universally accepted problem- I'm on my second RS4 since 2006 and have not had a problem with 1-2nd. However reverse is occasionallyas tight as a mouses ear and I find myself adopting a rarely used technique of quickly sliding into 5th before slotting reverse- works every time- not sure why.
As far as cams are concerned, I will concede there appear to have been problems with some cars- although it appeared confined to rash of cases about 2-3 months ago. I was at MRC when a newly acquired RS4 came in for a health check and suspicious ticking noises were heard- cam covers off- no problems detected. I get the impression that it was all a bit of a storm in a teacup.
most common mechanical issues are MAF, DV's, N75, pipework issues (they are 10 years old), the odd idling (coil packs) and EGT/Lambda issues (usually down to the MAF) and the oil return pipe from the cooler which seems to corrode.
I've had no mechanical failures on either of my RS's.

Yep would definitely say the 6 is a more expensive car to maintain than the 4, granted both are not cheap but the 6 edges it with it's DRC anbd gearbox problems hency why WD have stopped covering them....
I would like a 6 but after driving one recently it felt too big and not as sporty (more of a muscle car) than the RS4 which even as a 6ft 4'er I still have enough room in and don't fell cramped. The extra weight of the 6 means that it's about the same in stock form as the 4. In terms of modifying the 6 is not as flexible as the 4 and there are not many running over 530 as Mooch says.

should the argument/debate be more like...
which is the most expensive to go wrong
+
which is has the most number failures of any kind
Then it's going to be on par i'd say.... They both eat parts like EGT's, MAF's and Lambda's BUT out of warranty the 6 could cause you to have to sell your children....

Sooner sell my wife- my daughters a real petrol head.......shes only 2!
Very formal Mr Monkey
I saw a set of cams the other day that were, shall we say, less than perfect, but would agree thateither way they are both feck dear when they go wrong, all you can do is the most your wallet will allow to minimise the failure of the potential weakspots.

Morning Mr Mooch, I find that as a guest on your esteemed forum I am duty bound to be polite whilst engaging in inter-model sabre rattling and sparring.
My bottom line is that I don't care which Audi we're all talking about, I've driven the B5 model exclusively since 1995.
1.8T (from new, 95-2003- no failures of ANY kind), 1.8T Quattro (2003-2006 at bought at 3 years old- aircon compressor sorted by an independant in the carpark of my offices £500), RS4 (X reg, 2006-2007- no failures), RS4 (X-reg 2007-present- no failures- although 10K spent on upgrades and preventative maintenance- rear diff seals and CV boots recently...). I love 'em all!!!
The engineering integrity is peerless, the interiors are bullet proof AND stylish/well designed- and if you take care of them, wash them, service them and maintain them with the best service/parts/tyres/oil you can afford, they will usually repay you in spades. I always used to show my colleagues the boot hinges on the A4 sedan compared with any Japanese and most other car marques of similar price. Honestly, if they put that much thought into a hinge you must be on to a winner.....
Its inconceivable that Audi won't or haven't dropped the ball on occasion, but look at the cars we're all driving and tell me you don't get a rush when you blow other 'performance' cars into the weeds in a 1.6-2.0 tonne estate...

Amen brother- Amen!
You hit the nail on the head, look after them and they will look after you.
BUT, you cannot expect to tinker with, in some cases adding half as nmuch HP and Tq without some failures. goes with the territory in my book.
As for the performance, well, its beyond compare- my fav yarn about doing a 996 off the line at a 2 lane set of lights with a B&Q "bog in a box" in the back.... As he pulled in behind me at the lights, his view would have been of a 2 tonne estate car, covered in mud that had just done him on a full power green light launch, with the words "B&Q toilet to go" in his face.
