Bit worried about gearbox oil change now...

After reading this thread, I'm now slightly apprehensive as to the outcome. I dont know whether it was done at 40K and as it now has 80K, there is probably a fair bit of sludge etc thats built up. Flushing it through could highlight problem - leaking seals etc. Bit like if you flush through your central heating system at home and then discover all the leaks which were previously sealed by the sludge and the limescale!!!!

But I'm sure its better to change the oil and find problems and fix them early rather than wait for the box to fail and need a complete rebuild - or maybe im just convincing myself!!!
Did you get the gearbox oil change in the end? How di't go?

Hi. Yes it was done. It was fine. They found the gearbox gasket was leaking so replaced that and refilled. To be honest I havent noticed any difference. It was fine before. More precautionary and keeping to the service schedule. There were no silvery bits coming out so that was a good sign. Ive had no problems :-)

Cool. Nice to hear things are running ok afterwards, just gives other people slightly more confidence when considering the gearbox service!

Maybe we should start a gearbox service thread where people name the mileage they had it done, the dealer/specialist that done it, good/bad outcome, mileage covered since? So we can build up a list of dealers/specialists that have done it properly and those that didn't? What do you think guys?

For example:

47k / [Audi dealer or specialist] / lumpiness cured, smoother / 7k since and still ok

OR:

85k / [Audi dealer or specialist] / magnets covered in swarf, now much smoother gearchange / 10k since and still ok

OR:

72k / [Audi dealer or specialist] / underfilled 'box / failed within 1000 miles

Not sure on the legal side of this though in relation to the bad experience part. Maybe we should just post the good experiences and who did those? Unless of course you all think this is a pants idea..

I had a gearbox oil and filter change with Martin at Unit 20 yesterday.....

The oil wasn't that dirty and the magnets were not that full but it has only done 46k but the gearbox looked like it might have been low on oil

Maybe its me but the car does feel smoother and maybe even a little quieter.

I would recommend changing it though and i can't believe there is nothing in the service schedule for this.

Mine is going to MRC next week. 120k and no sign of previous gearbox service :shock: However gearbox seems fine at the moment *smacks wooden table really hard*

Well...

Most of the time it seems ok. However if you boot it there is definately an element of slip when it changes from first to second. The revs will stay constant for a second or two while the car continues to accelerate. But I have had one ocasion where I had the dreaded kick in the back. Only once but still worrying.

Did you get the boxed mapped yet (stage 1+) or is it still (stage 1). That may cause the hunting etc with the extra kick from your torque monster!

No I haven't had the tcu mapped, you think it might make it better or kill it quicker?

I think Mooch had similar issues with the standard TCU map. Once that was done, things were alot better. Might just be that it's trying to cut power to protect the 'box. He'll be along at some point to confirm... but I'm pretty sure I remember on his Youtube vids (or rather one of them) that the 'box was slipping like a bitch before the TCU map was done and you could actually hear the difference pre and post TCU map. Search for the user 'allywallywong' on Youtube and have a gander through those.

Yes I had the hunting problem too with an MTM ECU chip - boot it and it would do a dance between 4-5-4-3-4-5. A TCU rechip sorted it out and it has not done it since.....
