Guys - this all seems to be getting a bit heated - there's no need too call each other names!

Just to clarify:
Pad contact area is increased per wheel revolution.
The frictional force is a function of the area of the pad, not the swept area of disc. (Basically the product of the effective fluid pressure acting over the pad area). The fact that the swept area is greater (on a larger disc) only affects the heat dissipation. It's the lever arm effect (ie bigger radius) that increases the stopping force as per Rupert and my parallel posts above.

As the discs are dissipating the heat better they run cooler. This reduces wear, reduces distortion and cracking, and prevents the pads from burning as James seems to fear. In other words, moving the centre of action of the brakes outwards will keep the pads cooler.

As for the effect of putting bigger pads/calipers on - if they are basically covering the same arc, but simply extend nearer to the centre of the wheel, the effects will be very little - minimum effect on braking torque, and very small negative effect on heat dissipation.

If you want to improve braking you either have to put caliper/pads on which embrace a greater arc of the wheel (but this risks more heat build up as the ventilation is restricted), or move the braking point radially outwards with bigger discs - which is precisely what fitting the C6 discs achieved. Main downside is increase in unsprung mass - more loads into our tired DRC's (or new coil-overs if you prefer)!!

And finally a question - Matt1979 - why are you looking to swap back? Just intrigued!

Dave

ok maybe not owning an rs6 i overlooked the park function, but i do know a few people with autos who prefer not to leave them in park for a genuine reason, however on a lot of cars you cannot remove the keys unless you are in park.is this the case with the rs6?
so audi wasted time and money fitting a handbrake to the rs6,unless your matt and require it at 150mph?
matt at 150 the standard caliper will work better as the additional handbrake caliper is a baby in comparison so dont waste your money.

yes meccano.this is cheap because it is a bolt on disk with a new mounting bracket but your original caliper and pads,so i could take a few measurements,go to my local machining man,get the brackets made and hey ho i have grizz brakes.i am not saying they dont work but as i said these new disks are not in full use as the surface area is not covered by the pad.i am sure the b6 rs6 works much better with the right size caliper and pad?

Guys ,
The front kit uses a 390mm disc , this is 10mm larger than the Moveit kit, although it looks like all the whole disk face is not in contact with the pad, this is because the bell on this conversion is smaller creating a greater potential swept area. The pad contact area is the same as the original disk however by moving the caliper out onto the 390mm disk you achieve a much higher potential torque effect when braking, the diska are also consideavble thicker so aiding cooling.
The conversion kit is £280.00+vat plus the cost of new disks and pads, that are the same cost as std disks and pads. A Moveit kit is £3600.00+vat

I don't see any problem with moving the pads out - it's a simple and effective solution.
How much for the discs Grizz? Is the kit straightforward to fit?

The standard front c5 rs6 disc is £257.98 + vat.

The 390MM Disc is £257.98 + vat ...

Yes, that's the case with the RS6. I always thought it was kinda reassuring because dodgy people can't just lean in and pull the keys out.

The user manual says that the park brake disk inside the 'box is ok for parking on flat, or shallow inclines, but that it may be damaged if used without the handbrake on steeper slopes.

Would like to drop a real bombshell into this debate.
MRC have just completed a bespoke brake upgrade for my RS6.
Fronts consist of a 410mm AP racing disc + C6 RS6 calipers with full size pads in. Even under 20in C6 rims these need to be trimmed down a little to fit.
Rears consist full R8 set up including handbrake caliper.
All mounting brackets and bells etc courtesy of MRC
Looks AWESOME
Braking performance AWESOME.
Costs best speak Doug at MRC. As always great job well done by these guys.
Have loads of photos but computor illiterate, so if someone can pm me ill give my phone number and maybe you can talk me through doing an attatchement from my pictures file.
