I tend to agree with you Sulli. I test drove plenty of 997's before I bought the XK.
I just didn't feel any attachment to them.

When I decide to buy another sports car to complement the current stable I'm thinking along the lines of an Aston DBS, XKR-S or maybe even a V10 R8.

I've found the RS6 to have the ability to make me smile whenever I drive it even with its dynamic flaws. But then it's always a subjective opinion when it comes to car choice.
Current:
2004 RS6 Avant, 1999 Range Rover, 2008 Iveco Daily (faster than the 6 hands down)
Past:
2008 Jaguar XK, 2006 S4 Avant, 2009 Mini Cooper S (Wifey's daily drive)

Had a 993 c2, it only lasted 8 months before I flogged it. Bored me silly as I didn't find it a challenge to drive.

911 vs rs6 not the same type of car so they really aren't comparable in term of the driving experience, but when I want another sports car I will be having another TVR.

The R8 V10 is bonkers quick, but almost as soulless as a 911. That's just my personal opinion of course. I very much agree with Rowan Atkinson's take on Porsches:

Somehow, the typical Porsche people – and I wish them no ill – are not, I feel, my kind of people. I don't go around saying that Porsches are a pile of dung, but I do know that psychologically I couldn't handle owning one.
The 911s I have driven have been great machines, just not things I want to own.

The DBS is a great bit of kit, but I'd have a Virage over one.

A lot of the enjoyment of the RS6 for me comes from the Q-car surprise factor that you just don't get with an overtly sporty car.
