+1 for 6 Music. Brillant.

You'll have to go aftermarket. Footers was looking into it.

Shop your not wrong there. 6m seems like it was made purely for people who love music. It's great listening to old Peel sessions and it also costs me a fortune in adding new music my iPod!

I'll start a new thread on DAB and see what the collective think.

I have the first gen RNS-E in mine at the moment as I fitted it before footers got the latest one to work.

Coming from my old passat which had a 2010 RNS-510 (VW touchscreen equivalent) fitted, the RNS-E is good but does feel dated especially when it comes to the post code issue.

Im very tempted to get a second gen A3 RNS-E, swap the faces over, and code my unit to A3 to sell on. But I Don`t know whether I`ll have issues getting Bluetooth module and media adapters to work with the new unit.

I have been reading that it's not possible to code the 2010+ units for the RS6 C5. Not surprising since they came out 5 years after the end of the production of the C5.

I wonder how footlong's was coded / installed.

Where is that masked man, anyway?

Mr Footlong got his RNS-E work carried out by a guy called Nigel ; I believe he included some breakdown of the process/hardware used on a thread somewhere ( maybe on the 'Blank Canvas' one ?? ). He was very pleased with the job Nigel did for him if I recall.
Like most things, I guess it comes down to how much money you want to 'invest' in getting the latest spec unit .. If you don't already have an RNS-E face plate to use as a donor, I believe you're looking at well over £1k to complete the job. Things such as Bluetooth will add another few hundred.

That's what confuses me. On one side we've got footers with his apparently working a3 unit (coding unknown) and on the other hand we've got craigyb - a well known and respected Audi electronics ubergeek - saying it can't be done...

I suspect the truth is between the 2. That you can get the A3 unit to power up and pretty much work, but things like exact positioning thanks to data from the car's CANbus will be lost which footlong's post about the car positioning problem seems to backup.

That link I posted was for £579 for the RNS-E. Then you need the Kufatec adapters, etc, but that's peanuts.

Footers has his RNS-E coded as a B7 A4 IIRC. He said it took a while after fitting for the car and unit to recognise each other but is now working ok

Sure, deffo not an expert on this but I'm sure that Nick spent four figures.
Also, when I touched base with Nigel who did Nick's work, he said I'd be looking at ' over a grand, plus the initial outlay for a donor unit to provide the A6 fascia '. He did mention the Kufatec adapters etc, but also said a fair amount of additional wiring/updating would need to be carried out.

Sure, if you're paying a guy to do it, it'll cost more. IIRC the antenna is supplied so you can do the DIY install for about £50 on top of the £579 RNS-E unit.

Not quite dead yet. Can't remember what Nigel coded it for in the end but it was an A4 I believe, if someone can remind me where to go in Vagisil I will confirm for you girls. Satnav tracks perfectly, it is only after the unit has been taken out or power removed for any period of time that the satnav appears to do sod all and that sorts itself out after 10-15 minutes of driving as I have been there, done that, Amar mentioned this to me too and was correct. As far as I am concerned everything works as it should and the gloss screen surround can be swapped for the non gloss screen surround I believe. I am considering doing it other RNS-E that I have sitting here to go in to the S3 as the gloss will be a better match for some of the parts in there.

Mine is a feb/march 2012 model and has the led backlighting/higher res screen yada yada. Nigel charges accordingly but he was working on the car for the entire day until well in to the night, gutted the old non-OE bluetooth from the car, but out all the wires and soldered in the connectors for the new unit. The only possible thing may be that full range is being fed to the speakers, as well as the subwoofer doing its usual low frequency stuff but there are 1 or 2 wires spare from the job currently.

If you could tell us what the coding is of [37] or [56] (not sure which for RNS-E) and what you've got in the following adaptation channels, that would be great:

1-5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 16-18, 64-70, 97, 99, 112, 114-119, 136.

That should keep you busy for a while. :)
