After a lot messing about - i realised the numberplate lights cable was not connected to the number plate housing. It wasn't obvious there was a cable disconnected or that it fed the numberplate lights.
It wasn't until I had removed the number plate housing to try and trace where the wires went to that fed the numberplate lights - I then realised these wires are sealed into the unit. A word of advise - don't yank on these wires if you swap the bulbs - you will need a whole new housing unit if you pull one off from inside the housing.

lED versions now in and working.

what's the score with the removal of drivers headlight, its loose at the bottom of the lights near the grill - ie there's a good 1cm of travel back / forward.

I reckon that whoever had them out last couldn't put the difficult to access bolt back in.
