Oil Recommendations
Re: Oil Recommendations
i was in the same dilemma when i bought the car and after they put in Mobil 1, even though the car has always been on Castrol 505.01, i sent an email to Quattro GMBH and this is their answer regarding oil recommendations for this car:
"Dear Mr. XXXXX,
thank you very much for your message. Most oil companies have been phasing out engine oil according to VW specification 50501 because of the low demand. This oil was once meant to be used in heavy duty Diesel engines but due to its outstanding shear stability under high temperature we decided to use it for the RS 6 V8 twin turbo engine. The main reason for this move was the position of the turbo chargers which are pretty far located from the engine block and therefore from the oil supplying pump. After driving under extreme conditions, e.g. with high speed or under high load for a longer period of time and very high outside temperature, the oil pressure could drop to low levels when going back to idle.
Theoretically, engine oil to VW specification 50500 is not able to compensate the attributes of VW 50501 but the viscosity range of 0W-40 will stabilize oil pressure when the engine and turbo chargers are extremely hot. Hence, potential engine damage is not really an issue if VW 50500 is being used and there is no necessity to do drain this oil immediately.
The official substitute of VW specification 50501 is actually VW 50400, even it is mostly available in 5W-30, for example but without official endorsement MOBIL 1 ESP FORMULA 5W-30. We recommend to use VW 50400 when the next engine oil service is due (every 15000 km).
Kind Regards & Merry Christmas

Re: Oil Recommendations
Great, thanks for this.
Regarding the application of 50501 originally being used in diesel engines, this certainly stacks up when I asked ECP recently ; Although they found the 50501 reference, it all pointed towards diesel engines and therefore said it wasn't suitable !
There still seems to be oil of this specific type out there, just a question of looking I guess
Cheers

Re: Oil Recommendations
like the Quattro guy said, this is an oil used in diesel engines, so now worries, just look for the right one, try Liqui Molly, Motul, Shell or even Castrol, i like Liqui Molly and Motul over Castrol!

I'm rocking VAG ZGB 115 QLB 005 10, 5/40, platinum oil. Looks like diesel VAG engine oil.

Re: Oil Recommendations
Its says "meets the requirements" I'd go the TPS route personally as I don't trust ECP. After a bit of searching it would seem that the ECP oil is from Shell but here's a quote from
OILMAN " Who makes the base stock is a bit irrelevant, the oil is made on a budget, so they cut corners. The chances are it will be a basic base stock and reduced additive package". Pay your money make your choice

Re: Oil Recommendations
Is there a forum discount with Opie oils? If not use the one from M3cutters or similar.

The TPS near you (behind Seat) will sort you out no problems, got my oil from there when Audi serviced my C6 and know they deal with the public all the time, I wasn't asked for a card or proof I was 'in the trade', nor has anyone else I know.sulli wrote:Tried to get a trade card from tps but didn't manage it, isn't it just trade only?bilko1 wrote:Its says "meets the requirements" I'd go the TPS route personally as I don't trust ECP.

What did they provide you with Amar? Bet it's same stuff as Euro or GSF do (Fuchs), but with a premiumMr V10 wrote:The TPS near you (behind Seat) will sort you out no problems, got my oil from there when Audi serviced my C6 and know they deal with the public all the time, I wasn't asked for a card or proof I was 'in the trade', nor has anyone else I know.sulli wrote:Tried to get a trade card from tps but didn't manage it, isn't it just trade only?bilko1 wrote:Its says "meets the requirements" I'd go the TPS route personally as I don't trust ECP.

Re: Oil Recommendations
I can't remember what they gave me, they ordered it via my chassis number but it was Quantum, which is made for VAG by Castrol IIRC and what Audi would have used too, not sure on Fuchs, genuine oil isn’t expensive so just get the good stuff from TPS. It'll be good for you to find out where it is too.
