Can we also get some ideas of what 20" tyres fit? All users seem to go for 255/30/20 tyres, but I am hoping to try 265/30 and even 275/30 with the right spacers to get the offset right.

Anyone tried a wider tyre on 20s?

Mart.

Can I get a comment on Dunlop Sport maxx gt 255/35/19? Has only SpaceCowboy tried these? Is there something very bad about them that I dont know?

Pretty sure that I tried the Dunlops (in that size) and they would only work on the rear - rubbed old knobbly something rotten!!

No chance! Especially if lower than stock. Irrespective of ride height the genuine 20's being 9.5 j further narrow the gap to the knobbly bit!. Its very tight in there and can foul the arch liner on full lock too.

Just an update following an "incident" this week.

Had a front let go at speed on the A46 near Coventry - fortunately traffic was light and there was a layby 100yds further on - managed to stop in there (just!). Offside front completely knackered so no chance with the goo!

Tyre (Vred 275x30) had completely gone on the inner shoulder, BUT - no sign of rubbage on "ol' Knobbly" at all, and no sign of contact wear on the tyre, though hard to tell as there wasn't a lot of that bit left!

Only replacement available nearby was a Conti (275x30) so I had that fitted on the rear and moved the rear Vred (slightly more worn) to the front. I also had a spare Conti (new) at home (left over from a similar incident last year) so have had that put on too.

This weekend I checked the other side front for contact with Knobbly - all clear, but just to be sure I have now taken my grider to knobbly on both sides and he is no more!

So now I am running (worn) Vred's on the front, and new Conti's on the rear - not sure I feel as confident in the conti's as I did in the Vreds - but I am too mean to just bin two new Contis that have cost me £550 for the pair!

Any suggestions to put on the front next - anyone tried the Conti's with ol knobbly gone?? Do they fit (Yes I know I could try swapping them, but I'm old and lazy!)

tyre fitment

Post by alangjones » Sun Feb 27, 2011 8:51 pm

122000 miles now. All wear on inner side, even down to 'canvas'. Need to check after about 15/16 K. I got fed up and put on 18" rims, better ride less chance of kerbing, have tried several tyre makes. Average change at 19/20 K. I am on 3rd set of Vred Ultra Sessantas. Pay £125 a corner. Get tracking checked every 10/12K and have it adjusted. Less inner wear now.

RE: tyre fitment

Hi Alan

Just to clarify my post, the tyre went because of some debris in the road - virtually certain as I had checked the wear only the day before and all was fine.

My fronts tend to wear more on the inside than the out, but I put that down to the camber on the fronts, and the fact that most of my mileage is on motorway so the fronts dont get pulled about all that much. Wear on the rears is more even, but actually slightly more than the fronts. When I checked last week there was about 2-3mm left on the rears vs 4 on the front (measured to the "limit marks, not full tread depth!)

Keep wondering about looking for a set of 18" wheels, initially to put winter tyres on, but if I got to like them, then perhaps I'd run them in summer too!

Dave.
Best decision I made was to go to 18" rims. I run on 245/40R18 tyres and 97Y. So far over 60K or so on 3 sets of Sessantas I have had no problem 21/22K wear, snow and wet is good. They are quiet and corner fine. At £125 a corner from Tyremen of Hull. Also try Click on Tyres for Sessantas.

How many of the 'knobbled' wouldnt have got 'knobbled' if the 'knobbly' bit was filed down? Most I suspect...?

True. But you've got to wonder why it's there. I would suspect it's there to prevent stress crack propogation. This is often why there are mysterious radii on load bearing components. This is also why aeroplanes have rounded windows and not square (a few planes were lost before they realised that stress cracks were forming in the corners and propogating from there).

Of course, it could just be a brain burp of the design engineer while he was in front of his CAD station. Or an overreaction to a finite element analysis. The safety margins built into the design of suspension components are generally very generous. (ahem, DRC... )

true say. considering its location though, my gut reaction is that it isnt in a critically strained area (with my superman eyes where I can see stress fractures at a molecular level). Perhaps they wanted to prevent larger wheels/tyres which would strain the suspension componants more?

OK, not a tyre I would normally go for, but I can vouch for the fact that a Nexen 275/30 ZR19 does fit with old knobbly ground away - no idea if it would be OK with it still there - it would be a close call!!

Fitted as a result of yet another front wheel puncture when in the middle of nowhere! Fortunately the "local" tyre dealer had just one in stock, so more in hope than expectation I had it put on and am back mobile until my new Vreds arrive.

And the price... £120 incl VAT, fitting and balance!!

At that price it might well be an option if you plan to track the car in the dry for example!!

Dave
