Also consider a SWB W12. Know a chap you onwed an RS6 C5, W12 and V10 S8 (in that order) and said the W12 handled way better than the RS6. Was lucky enough to go for a spin in his W12 and I must say to this day it remains probably the most impressive Audi that I've ever been in (hope my S4 doesn't hear this and get jealous!). Sensible milers from 15k, lowest mileage on Autotrader (55k) asking 19k.

thanks Ian - wasn't on my list, but certainly worth a look. Most of the ones on sale just now seem to have pretty high mileage

True but it really is not as nice in any aspect when up close. The A8 is easy to justify being more expensive (if you can stretch to the extra).

Don't take this the wrong way but if you went for a 3.0 or 4.2TDi you'd get a 6 spd trans instead of 5, and massive economy gains, and I truly don't think it's much less of a car...

Happy to admit the W12 would be quicker money no object.

I love the Phaeton W12, but it's a porker. The A8 is aluminium at least so much lighter.

I wonder if the D3 S8 is quicker / nimbler than the C6 S6 because it's aluminium.

S8 high suspension setting,x4 Pirelli Sottozeros and of course Quattro.

The D3 S8 weighs 1940,the S6 1910.So the difference is negligible.

The S8 has an extra 15bhp,but the torque figures are identical.(398)

The W12 has the most torque at 428,and shares the S8s' 450bhp.

There is nothing wrong with an alpha. I loved my last one a 156 sportwagon. It's still going string today, although worth nothing!!!!

Great fun to drive

I've still got an Alfa 156 too - not the greatest turning circle in the world, but it's really comfy and a great drive. Plus it looks like a spaceship! Nothing at all wrong with considering an Alfa - they cooler than Audis imo. The only worry is the depreciation they still suffer, which is great if you're buying, but kinda means you're stuck with it once you've taken the plunge! You may as well ride the elevator to the bottom, as it were.

I still have a yearning for a 3.2 Alfa GT - when I had the chance I bought an RX8 instead, and regret it to this day!

Could you give us some idea of what's on your long list of requirements? It might help us come up with some suggestions!
