The feeling was that the rough sounding engine note and definite vibration was unlikely to be normal, but Vag-Com shows nothing wrong with the engine. So, nothing to fix.
The car's not slow but is definitely not stupidly fast. It takes big throttle openings to get it to go. You can't safely overtake in 'S' or 'D'.
Is there any way that the gearbox ECU could be interfering?
Once again, all your support is appreciated.

Hi Everyone.
The end result of all the trouble seemed to be due to two elements: 1) the car had not been used out of town for 3 years and took a lot of clearing and 2) the gearbox was on its way out and was probably keeping the power down for a long time after a gear change.
In the end though the DRC system got the better of me – 11 dampers in 9 months was just too much. I spent over 100 days in Audi loan cars so reluctantly ended up rejecting the car to the original dealer. A real shame as the '6 will always be a special car.
Now driving a B7 3.0TDi (OK, sorry!) but still have the RR quattro in the garage and the Wife's 2.0 TT.
A huge Thank-You to everyone for their help. Gray
