Sounds like a better plan than an unknown place then.

If you were going north then I'd pop into Unit20 and see grizz. Or, as you're in the Midlands just pop down to MRC.
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!

I've been learning a lot about these boxes recently, including tearing one down to the ground and about to rebuild it.

Be very careful driving around with this issue.
If it's a valve-body problem (sounds like it) it could lead to the A drum coming in contact with the C drum and that would damage the A drum and other parts and require a complete rebuild. Apparently that is a common issue.
Don't want to worry you :)

Hi

Where is best place to get transmission filter kit? I guess Audi would be best but are there any independant suppliers with same quality? Dont fancy ebay for obvious reasons.

Cheers

Unit 20 recently did mine, I think they only use VAG parts.
Parts were about £70 Oil about £90, labour about the same as 1 hour at Audi.
Unless you have the knowledge, time and equipment to DIY, why would you?

For info original box 50,000 approx 25,000 since last change no problems or noticeable difference before or after change, but Grizz reported oil was 'burnt , slightly dirty but not metal on magnets. Basically needed changing for preventative maintenance.

I don't think it's worth the risk. There have been a lot of incidences of the wrong strainer being installed with nasty consequences (pick up pipe length differences).

You're looking at list prices of about £45 for the strainer and £25 quid for the sump gasket. The oil is pricey, but check the FAQ for equivalent oils at other brand dealers.

Thanks for the input.

Well an update, my car has been at the garage for a couple of weeks now,

tried an oil and filter change first, made no difference.

next thing is an gearbox ecu swap, but they've been on back order, one arrived today.

If that doesn't work then its out with the box and engine...

It is not impossible to remove just the gearbox. But there is almost as much work involved as removing both at once. There is also a much higher risk of damaging something.
