Ok - I was going to go aftermarket for a new head unit as I have the RNS-D with a sat nav that seems to think I am somewhere in the North Sea. However Mr Footlong's set up seems to be the way to go, so just to confirm I will need a C5 A6 RNS-E for the face plate and a latest LED unit A3 or TT?? Have I got that right? Also Mr. Footlong could you let have have the details of the guy who did the install. Many thanks

I am genuinely impressed with this unit and now have no intention of going aftermarket, I will just shoehorn the DAB in and hide it away as I only listen to 1 station anyway. Never thought that I was going to be happy with the OE but the post-2010 Satnav is sooooo quick at alternate routes, winging it when you miss a turn etc.

You will need a 1st gen RNS-E unit in A6 fascia format as you can't get the 2nd gen (my one) in a A6 fascia format. You then need to get hold of a 2nd gen RNS-E which seems to be most commenly available in A3 fascia format I believe. I used NHN (Nigel Hobden) and am VERY happy with his work. His attention to detail was flawless. I will PM you his number and email address shortly. He has a line on head units fro Germany and I guess (don't actually know though) that some sort of warranty is available on units provided by him, you need to check that.

He will merge the A6 fascia on to the newer gen backend, keeping the newer high res screen (you can keep the gloss screen surround of he can put the standard surround on, I went for contrast just to point out that it was modified) and can leave the old gen buttons or fit the newer brushed effect ones. He will then put the A3 fascia on to the older gen backend and recode it to A3 fitting and you can then sell that unit on if wanted. I will be selling mine once I get it back from Nigel as he needed it to get home!

Almost certainly all you need is a new GPS puck - they frequently go, though mine had me mid-Atlantic, not in the N Sea!! Will cost you less than a tenner...

Still, a new RNSE may be more fun!!

Yep, I am really impressed with the aftermarket puck performance that gets slapped under the dashboard. Picks up 5 satellites with the RNS-D and 8 with the E.

No can do currently as I am short 1 diversity adaptor at present I believe. Pumping MP3 only at present. Nigel is sorting that on his next visit. Do stations still exist on AM/MW? ;)

Being an oldish fart i like listening to five live sometimes although reception is <beep> at the best of times. Saying that reception is very good in my E61.

Only recently fitted a first gen RNS-E and bluetooth module to my C5 S6 and now you've gone and shown me this!

Im now very tempted to get a second gen one and do a swap seeing as i already have an A6 unit to rob the facia from, just a couple of questions though.

>was there any wiring changes required on the quad lock (or else where) to match the newer version?
>was it just a case of coding the unit to A6 and waiting for the car and radio to make friends?
>do we know if the newer unit will still work with C5 steering controls? as ill be fitting them soon too.
>will the new unit still "talk" to the bluetooth module i already have?

cheers,
jordan

I am afraid that you are talking to the wrong person as I was working in between popping downstairs to see what Nigel was up to and getting ready to go to ADI. 5/10 years ago, I could have told you the answers as I would have done the work myself but not these days. I believe that the unit is actually coded as an A4 as there is no A6 coding for the latest model.

You could always contact NHN and ask him you know. He is a very helpful guy but don't forget that this is his livelihood too. If you want his contact details feel free to PM me.

Footers, I'll have the speed camera RNS E DVD thanks, does it still show normal petrol stations as well as Tesco/Shell ones? I only use T99 or V Powers too but it's still handy knowing the location of others.

Yes dear, nothing has been removed, only extra, selectable POI groups added. Will sort for you early next week if that is ok as it takes an hour or so to make, verify and test each disc.
