Drivers side (uk) rear footwell soaked

Post by Swan » Tue Nov 14, 2023 12:49 pm

Noticed that the drivers side (uk) rear footwell is completely soaked. Front footwells don’t seem to be wet. Now very worried about the electronics.

I have wet vacced the carpets and I’m going to pull them up to see what lies beneath.

Checked the drain channels behind the cowl and these are ok. What else could be letting water in? I don’t have a sunroof. Weather seals on the doors look good. Not losing washer fluid.

A quick google search says it could be blocked AC drain or unibody seals - I don’t know where either of these are located. Can someone help?

Don't think it'll be the AC drain if it's the rear footwell. See if it's damp under there when you lift the front footwell carpet and soundproofing (hope you are strong).

Could be the joint in the rear screen washer pipe that's popped apart. It runs through there somewhere.

I would check the weather seal inside the door trim - someone might have been in there and not replaced it properly. Also check the slot drains in the bottom of the door.

Have a look in the boot to see if there is water in the battery compartment. Sometimes the weather seals on the rear lights perish and let water in. When you brake the water rushes forward under the rear seats and ends up in the footwell.

If you have an avant, lift the tailgate and see if any water comes out where it shouldn't. The seal under the aluminium trim strip perishes and water fills the tailgate.

What’s the best way to access under the rear carpet? If I pull the rear bench seat out can I get under?

I’ve managed to pull the front carpet up from where in joins the door enough to check for water - thankfully it looks dry. Are there any precious electronics in the rear footwells?

No water in battery compartment.

I will check the doors and tailgate thanks

The bench seat comes up easily enough, just be careful not to yank it too hard or you might break the heated seat cable harness.

Ok. Bench seat is out. Can confirm carpets only wet in rear drivers side. But properly soaked / saturated. I’ve rung it out as much as possible and put the wet vac on it. There’s no ECU or anything in here, just a wiring loom.

Checked the tail gate - there’s a bit of plastic /rubber trim that doesn’t quite sit right that encloses the rear right light cluster. I have removed that and refitted it, but doesn’t look like it does much.

I’ve checked all the door seals they look ok.

I don’t think there’s a washer hose on this side. Think it’s in the passenger side?

I think just going to leave the carpet up and see if it fills up again.

You could dry it out and put some talc around the top of the well to see where the water has flowed.

Yes I will keep an eye on it. Might try a hosepipe in the door to double check that.

I had a blocked AC Drain - and actually because it was a summer time, AC was working a lot and there was a lot of water. And it was flowing from the front passenger footwell to the back passenger footwell. I thought my kids left an opened big water bottle in there, there was so much water. Drain is behind the glovebox near the center console

Water seems to be in the rear drivers side footwell only so it can’t be the AC? I also haven’t had the AC for a couple of weeks.

It’s been raining today and it’s wet again. Can’t tell where it’s coming from.

Is it advisable to lift up the two bungs in the footwell that lead into the unibody? They look like they’re silicones
Into place. I read on another forum that somebody had the same issue and they found that water was rising up from the unibody and that replacing the ‘unibody seals’ solved his problem. However the thread went dead and is quite old, so can’t find out what seals he would be referring to.

The other thought I had is that I have removed the engine under tray temporarily- could this provide a route for water?

Pull up the carpet as much as you can and get someone to spray water on the door and surrounding area while you look inside. Consider the talc trick too.

While in for fitting of a new oil thermostat the garage kindly blew compressed gas down all the drain holes. They noted there was a blocked one under the servo. Hopefully that works - will update after next rainfall

Car is nice and dry. Blocked drain under the servo was the issue.
