KW V1 vs rebuild

Post by Lander91 » Mon Nov 07, 2022 9:40 am

Full disclosure, the rebuild part relates to my existing H&R Bilstein setup.

I'd like to know if anyone has experience with both, I know the H&Rs are not regarded well at all.

Currently the H&rs are bouncy, likely in need of a rebuild which is priced around $200nzd each. So $800nzd all up.

I can get a set of new KWs for $2800nzd

The question is, how bad are normally functioning h&rs vs the KWs?

That is unless the way my h&rs are acting now is normal for them.

The H&R are awful bone shakers and saggy at the rear, even when they are working OK. I've driven an RS6 on them and it wasn't a pleasant experience (compared to mine at least).

I have KW v1s. Can't honestly say the ride is much good. The bilsteins that were on before were crap. Both rock hard and unpleasant and tiresome on anything other than smooth tarmac. KW are slightly better over small imperfections.

I'd rebuild what is on there if it's ok but a bit bouncy. It's a far cheaper known option. I assume whoever does the rebuild be able to advise on whether they are just bouncy or whether they are worn.

For my 2p’s worth I have v1’s (thought they were v3 when I bought the car) and found them really crashy and also had a lot of understeer. I ended up getting someone in to do a full set up on the car https://www.chassis-setup.co.uk/track-and-race-setup
This included full adjustment where possible (don’t think the v1 have camber/caster), corner weighting/balancing the works. Even asked how often I carry a passenger and the approx weight then loaded passenger seat with ballast to get the distribution right. Appreciate you likely can’t use the company I did given location but would definitely recommend having this done as it’s night and day on mine (and I have had it for 10 odd years)

Thanks gents. @Marv, still crashy but otherwise handling better?

I think I'll rebuild the current setup, if no bueno still I can at least sell them as rebuilt and hope that I, at the least, recover the rebuild costs.

Defo not as crashy or seem so hard but did adjust the ride height a bit from memory which may have improved it. Still pretty stiff but much more compliant and feels safer at speed
