Gearbox trouble (Was kinda expecting it)
Hi chaps,
Sorry to bore everyone with the inevitable gearbox troubles thread
1st , 2nd , 3rd are ok it just struggles going into 4th and 5th. It does go in but ends up in limp mode. The car drives ok in 1-3 so maybe its not terminal but we wont know yet.
Ive noticed the gearbox leaking so will try fixing that first and get new fluids in. Im guessing best case scenario is due to low fluids?
If its totally knakered who is best these days to sort it? and preferably not at £7k!
cheers
J

There's a list of known gearbox refurbers in the FAQ.
Definitely sort the leak first. Change the fluid and the filter and see what you get.
You never know. I lost all drive on my Rangey but after a filter and ATF change it's as good as it ever was (which isn't great for an almost 40 year old car).
Oh yeah, post the fault codes.

ah yeah forgot the codes - they are 17118 17119 which I beleive is relating to gear 4 and 5 - incorrect gear ratio
Re: Gearbox trouble (Was kinda expecting it)
Yeah, that’s probably either serious wear or low fluid. Definitely sort the fluid asafp then take it from there.

Re: Gearbox trouble (Was kinda expecting it)
If you are replacing the filter. Check od of o ring while it’s on the filter
And Id of recess where filter fits.
Should be interference fit.
Hate for you to have the same problem I had.
See recent post transmission fluid change.

Re: Gearbox trouble (Was kinda expecting it)
I am wondering how many gearboxes have been replaced because of a 5p o-ring.

Beggars belief. But sh?t happens. Very often in my case recently.
I am hoping my scenario is a one off.
Cannot believe that this has been happening for a while.
But good point Matt. You never know.

Yes I will also be watching for the outcome. Good move taking it to grizz. The car is in good hands.
Re: Gearbox trouble (Was kinda expecting it)
Well got the car back today, drove it up there and back again, 200 miles round trip and its almost normal in gears 1-3 but 4 and 5 must be toast.
The leak didnt really make any difference to fluid levels as it was so small it just looked alot on my block paving, so with fluid levels normal and those codes it means it needs rebuilding.
I had 4 good years with it but Ill have to just sell it as is unfortunately.

Re: Gearbox trouble (Was kinda expecting it)
That’ll be another breaker if you do that.
Re: Gearbox trouble (Was kinda expecting it)
Why don't you try this:
Even if you sell it straight afterwards you'll almost certainly get a better price than if you try to sell it with a duff box.Shoppinit wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2011 11:31 amKnown Gearbox rebuilders
£1600 gearbox rebuild all in, apparently. Awaiting feedback: http://www.autotransuk.com

Re: Gearbox trouble (Was kinda expecting it)
Yeah Ill have to mull it over for a bit. That will just be for the repair though not including taking it out the car and putting it back.Shoppinit wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 5:08 pmWhy don't you try this:
