Instrument Cluster

Post by steve2003rs6 » Mon May 04, 2020 6:14 pm

Noticed the dis display fades (missing pixels) as it gets warmer.
When cold display is fine.
Bought another RS6 cluster.
Was wondering if it is easy to alter the milage on the new cluster to replicate the existing mileage.
In addition bought chrome dial surrounds. Will see how they look.
Regards Steve.

Will probably need coding, had to have it done on my S4. Do you have VCDS? (Vagcom)

Mileage isn’t stored in the cluster. Your new cluster should display the correct mileage.

Is anything stored in the cluster, Shopp? Can't remember what was done to the S4, was about 12 years ago now.

Thank you chunky79 and shoppinit.
Great to know I can just xchange the cluster and retain the original mileage.
Regards to both.

It won't necessarily be an easy swap. You still have the immobiliser to contend with.

Funnily enough, first time I coded a cluster was on a mate’s B6 S4. Audi assistance had jump started his car and borked the instruments. Audi replaced it FOC but they couldn’t code it properly. And gave up.

What a bummer.
I thought it was old one out new one in.
Immobiliser coding ???????
Looks like I will need someone who knows what they are doing to switch them over.

Unfortunately the milage is cluster dependant, swapping another cluster will only show that clusters mileage.
A few years back I sent my cluster off to have the display changed for the hi Res style with the fancy display. While it was away I put in a spare cluster just so I could use the car until it was sent back.
For the spare cluster to work you first need to retrieve the immob code. You need some tools and software to do it. There is a Vagcom cable from eBay and then you need a software called vag commander. You read the skc pin from the original cluster before you send it then use the same software to write the pin to the spare cluster.
:assflash:

Fukinavit many thanks.
Just been reading up on it. Seems like a nightmare to correct a few pixels.
My thoughts were similar to yours.
Old one away for repair
Replacement so I can continue to use the car.
Looks like I have opened up a bag of worms.
Might have to forget it and live with the faulty pixels when the cluster gets warm
Or put a fridge/freezer on the back seat to keep the instrument cluster cold ????????

Mine has faded a bit as well. What is the display using? Is it LED? I'd think it could be repaired by a good electronics nerd.

I might be confusing with my BMWs then. Sorry for the bum steer.

Steve, if your instrument cluster is otherwise fine, why not just get someone to swap the LCD? Or even better, buy a brand new LCD and keep the other cluster as a spare.

There was a thread recently on new LCDs from eBay IIRC.

Thank you all for the info.
Was browsing the internet for c5 spares. Came across a very good condition RS6 instrument for £290.
Thought I was being clever.
Bought it to replace mine while mine away for repair and I could continue to use the car.
A company called cartronics seem to have good experience of these.
Didn’t realise I would open up a bag of worms.
Hey ho expensive learning curve
I will be back at unit 20 soon for rad cooler and other stuff. See if we can get a temp fix to keep me on the road while repair to original is sorted.
Could live with the problem if I have to.
Think I am getting OCD with my pride and joy.
