Headlight problem
Headlight problem
Hi,
Sorry if this has been covered a million times.......
MOT was an ‘issue’ last time due to one headlight not auto levelling. The garage got it through, but it’s time to address the problem. I have taken the headlight out and have immediately seen the problem.
On the exterior of the casing is normally a small white cog that acts at ninety degrees presumably to do the levelling. The white cog is however missing in action.
Does anyone know if you can buy the white cog? Or is it the usual story of having to buy a new headlight for the sake of a 50p cog?
Cheers all
Nick

Re: Headlight problem
Didn't someone else say that a meccano or similar type of set had an appropriate cog?
It's just a bit of plastic that can be 3d printed in all probability.
Mine haven't auto adjusted for ages. I think they have been cable tied static. That seems to not cause bother at MOT time.

Re: Headlight problem
Auto level is not a fail as long as the level of the headlights and beam pattern are fine.
Mine passed only a few days ago, and after I got my ticket in my hand i posed the question.
But of course fixing it is the better option.

Re: Headlight problem
If you know what size the gear is, these guys are pretty good if its available off the shelf:

Anyone got a pic of the missing bit?

Chunky. If you have the old one I can make you one.
Regards Steve.
Ps is it a helical gear or a straight cut.

Re: Headlight problem
I think I have a spare one on my old lights, not 100% sure. I'll have a look over the weekend if I remember. If I send you one I'm sure there will be plenty of folks in here who'd be happy to give you some beer tokens for one

Re: Headlight problem
Happy to help if I am needed.
Just let me know.
Straight cut gear (spur gear) so much easier to manufacture than a helical.
Even if it’s helical can still be done but takes a bit longer.
St/ steel, brass or plastic are achievable
As long as I get a detailed drawing or pattern
Regards steve
Ps although I am now retired. Still have access for cnc turning and milling.

Re: Headlight problem
I think it may be a crown gear if it's the one I'm thinking of. I have a spare set of lamps I can pop one off if someone points out which gear it is.

Re: Headlight problem
I've managed to get the cog off my spare set of lights. I'll send it to Steve to get some made up.
If anyone wants some, can you please comment here so Steve knows how many to get made

Chunky. Will get on with them as soon as I receive the pattern.
Will probably make 6 initially to see if you are happy with them.
