DIS LED pixel problem
DIS LED pixel problem
Hi-De-Hi Everyone!
Never had a problem before with my DIS display on the dash, but know that they often suffer with pixel fading problems due to heat or poor connections. My problem seems a little different although I'm sure that it just needs a replacement LED display unit.
I've seen problems where pixels fade either individually or entire lines go missing. My problem looks like a tiny worm has got in and made a funny pattern, and those tiny pixels are permanently illuminated. I'm sure it could be down to a poor connection, maybe moisture between the panes or delaminating. One things for certain is its getting bigger and started when we had the first proper cold mornings.
Anyway, I'm resigned to that fact that its buggered and needs replacing, and I'd I know I could send it away to be be repaired for around £150 maybe. I love getting my hands dirty though and soldering doesn't normally put me off. Has anyone else done it on our cars? There's lots of guides for other Audi but I've not seen a specific one to the RS6 yet. A DIY fix looks like costing less than a £15 if I can find the correct LED display.
Cheers
Chris

Re: DIS LED pixel problem
I am sure I have seen the part number for the display floating around. I'll try to find it.
If not, can you get your dashpod out and see if there's a part number on there?

This one looks pretty good:

Have you got a hot air rework station?

That one atleast lists the RS6 Shopp. Others just says Jaeger or VDO.

Got a handheld hot air gun with small nozzles. Need to get some better flux though as my flux pen ran out a few weeks back when I trying to fix my AV amplifier

With temperature control? If not then you'd be better off with something like this:

Also ChipQuik no-clean flux FTW.

Re: DIS LED pixel problem
Please post a how to when you have done it Nobby, mines fine now it's cold but in Summer it starts to fade slighty.

Where were these solutions 10 years ago when they would have made a killing?

Re: DIS LED pixel problem
It’s just like the b5 fix to be honest, I’ve done my B5, TT and C5.
You don’t NEED, a hot air gun but it would obviously make it easier, I’ve done all mine with a maplin soldering station, but obviously without the hot air gun your hardest part is de-soldering the ribbon.
I found the C5 the hardest to calibrate the cluster needles afterwards, and obviously you need VCDS to do this, but they kept loosing there position for some reason, the other two clusters where much easier so maybe just my cluster.
Iirc when I last looked, you couldn’t get genuine screens any more, I fitted one of the last ones on my B5, I just fitted one of the Chinese ones, at first it did seem a little bright but if I’m honest, the last time I drove the car it seems to have calmed down a bit.
I’ve tried to upload a photo but it’s playing up for some reason.
Edit: seems it’s sorted now.
As you see, usual DIS failing.
Sorry for the orientation, but that’s the new screen in and I’m just testing that the soldering is fine, you can see the brightness of the screen in comparison, as I say the screen has dimmed slightly since.
