Maybe it is in fact a bad tappet causing delayed valve opening or something. Could explain the clicking sound you also heard.

A ring will expand very quickly with heat, a valve maybe not as fast. If a valves stuck open when cold, i would of thought it would stick even more with heat.

I could be totally wrong though.
