Gearbox Upgrades

Post by R56WUF » Fri Dec 21, 2018 9:24 pm

Hi all

Does anyone have any up to date information on gearbox upgrade options please? I know there will be lots of info through searching, however with 517, Level 10 and ACE no longer offering upgrades then I’m keen to try and get some up to date information.

Thanks

I think Poland may be an option these days. I think Si from TTE might have some info on those guys that built that 900HP C5, that had some gearbox work done innit.
No matter where you go, there you are.

I assume you mean auto gearbox upgrades, not upgrading to a manual box?

Just a heads up, this company said they would do a full manual conversion for under £7k

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 2721568221

I messaged them and they said.......

Hi there,

We only convert the C5 RS6 to manual the correct way. Meaning no adapter plate, or drilling, grinding etc.

We use a complete replacement block and crank, the block bolts directly to the 01E 6 speed manual, and the crank accepts a V8 manual single-mass flywheel, and B5 RS4 clutch.

Cost of it all is £6995.

Many thanks

That seems too cheap, all things considered.

Surely someone over here must be able to upgrade these, it's just a gearbox! They don't do anything to the casing, it's only the clutch packs that get upgraded with springs and played, easy. And verters get built over here, no?
If I had enough time, I'd do them, nothing difficult.

^This. Autoboxes are not rocket surgery, even if they are a bit voodoo.

I personally would go with a level 10 rebuild kit and do it myself.

I’m going to do my spare box in the new year and think I’m going to go with a level 10 kit-there’s a thread on here where a guy rebuild he’s one(RS2) who I got my spare box from and he said it’s not that hard to do+ there’s a manual you can download but grizz is the man to do it if you don’t have time to do it.going to get the valve body rebuilt over here with a few upgrades I’ve found from over the pond if I don’t go that route I’ll send it off to level 10 or 517 trans

the converter is the sticking point-I’ve got to get my converter rebuilt in my e61 535d and I know Sussex autos do a uprated one for that so I’ve emailed them to see if they can do the one in my rs if not I’ll send my spare off to as advanced automotives for one of there’s

As for going manual( I know you don’t want too go that route) it’s not worth the effort unless your going big power and even then they still break(ask bam!) and ruins,in my eyes the way it drives

It’s a c5 rs6 so unless you have deep pockets or good with spanner’s don’t own one

Sorry for the rant I’ve had a lot of coffee this morning as the baby’s had me up all night!🤦🏻‍♂️

it's only the clutch packs that get upgraded with springs and played, easy.
And uprated pump, modified pick up etc.

There's a whole lot of little improvements/mods that all have to work together. But I agree an uprate pack from Level 10 would probably cover most things.

Pretty sure Chester offer an uprated box, and I think AMD did, though I seem to recall no-one could find out what they actually did - there's a long thread on here somewhere!

Yeah, wasn't going into everything MrPerc. My point was, it'sreally nothing special that gets done in the grand scheme of things.

Don't think grizz will upgrade the box himself, he's normally too busy for this so just get a company he trusts to do it. Same as MRC, they won't do box work from what I understand.
Winder how much the parts would be from yank land? Shocked there's not a company here in the UK that'll do the same.

You have to be careful with having more oil than required cause it's harder to cool then. Could always beef up the cooler.
What we really need is, the newer boxes to be the same size so they'd fit the C5 chassis!

Interesting cost as the eBay advert states a C5 RS6 should be £8,995?
