Bolts anyone??
Re: Bolts anyone??
They don't need to bear load. Only centre the wheel. Once the bolts are tight the load is borne by the contact between the hub flange and the wheel.
Although I would argue that plastic is a bad idea because you should torque the bolts up with the wheel on the ground.

Re: Bolts anyone??
Oh I totally agree with you that they are a bad idea as they are easily lost when tyres are changed and you don't know about it until you remove the wheel weeks even months later when it's too late too go back and argue about it . (Not that I hold any bitterness).
Though I didn't exprerence any ill effect from not having one . Other than it being a total biatch to line the wheel up .
So yes they do a great job of aligning the wheel .
I would however argue that it's better too tighten a wheel unweighted as it's free to align its self without fighting the weight of the vehicle.

Re: Bolts anyone??
Agree, but it's not practical for most people to torque up a wheel in the air.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Re: Bolts anyone??
Never thought this topic would get so interesting!!
I ordered 8 35mm bolts from the supplier link below. Only thir warehouse (aka ECP) managed to ship 8 SETS of bolts including lockable ones!! No wonder the package seemed so heavy on arrival.
Hopefully the right bolts will be here tomorrow.

While I agree that it helps... Vital is not the way that I would put it... otherwise OEM manufacturers wouldn't have done this.Shoppinit wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2017 12:33 pmI strongly dispute this.RS2 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2017 11:29 amSorry to point this out... but... (this is my understanding of it... that's all)
The wheels are centered on the wheel bolt head and recess design in the wheels rather than on the spigot itself.
The spigot is simply there to allow you to line up the wheel bolts easily.
Once you have torqued the wheel bolts up fully, the centering spigot performs no function whatsoever.
Personal experience has also shown me that the spigot is vital in centering.

These are from my 1990 T3 van. There are other vehicles that came without spigot centering and there is usually a mm or so clearance around the spigot. As you've pointed out, once the bolts/nuts are tight the spigot is redundant.

Re: Bolts anyone??
Maybe with the conical bolts the centering is better without a spigot to ensure alignment. Or maybe any application that can use steel wheels doesn't need good centering.
Either way, on the RS6 with OE alloys the spigot is vital for correct wheel centering.

OK - I'll let you know how I get on with the 5mm spacers rather than hub-centric ones.
For those following the thread with intent interest the bolts finally arrived today - and the ECP part no is 983 77 5101 (that's each bolt).

It's horses for courses, innit. Vital in some applications, less so in others.

Re: Bolts anyone??
OK - the saga continues!!
Went to fit the rear (5mm) spacers and the longer bolts this pm..... and the bolts are too long!
There is something behind the bub which the bolts go into that partially obstructs the hole, and means the bolts have to be exactly the right length!
So, now my options are to either try and find some 32mm bolts, or to go for 8mm hubcentric spacers (all round)... Doh!!
