Power steering pump issue?
Power steering pump issue?
I have a noise which sounds a bit like my old corrado g60's supercharger. I've only had the car a few months & it's always sounded the same, although the sound seems to get louder as the car warms up. Steering fluid is at the correct level.
Is this the kind of noise a failing power steering pump might make?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Power steering pump issue?
Could be gearbox ATF pump cavitation if your strainer is blocked or your ATF level is low.
Or belt noise from over-tensioned cam belt / aux belt.

Re: Power steering pump issue?
Or if it just had a gearbox service with the wrong filter (incorrect pick up length) before you purchased it. Does the car drive ok? Does the noise change with the rpm?

Re: Power steering pump issue?
Thanks for the replies, yes the car drives ok although the change from 2nd to third is to my mind seems a bit late ( circa 2300-2500 rpm no matter how gently I'm driving), & yes the noise does rise and fall with engine rpm.
The car had a gearbox rebuild in 2013, about 9000 miles ago, I think the time when the filters with the wrong length pick up pipe were in circulation so this has been worrying me a bit.
I think the next step is to take it to a specialist although none (I trust) near by.
I have an mb model ur which is a nice simple car to work on compared to this beast whic I'm still a bit scared to touch...

No need to be scared. They are just a regular engine... crossed with a refinery, china Shop and the Apollo mission.

Re: Power steering pump issue?
a few pics, i'll take some better ones when i get the chance.
I've had it since 2004, in that time it's done less than 10 thousand miles. It just comes out now for an mot every year then back into hiding.

No accident that the images are mostly from behind
Re: Power steering pump issue?
Well.. turns out it is a very noisy power steering pump so looks like I'll be getting my hands dirty again.
Is there anything to note for changing the pump on an rs6?, looks straight forward enough.
