Alternator

Post by MarkPRS6 » Thu May 05, 2016 4:38 pm

Hi

Just driving home and my alternator light came on along with all the gearbox warning lights and gearbox seemed to be in limp mode. Limped the old girl home and switched off.

When I restarted the car, gearbox seems fine but battery voltage is around 11 volts and nothing seems to be coming out of the alternator. It may be a drive belt gone but more likely is the alternator.

I'm hoping that the old girl threw a hissy fit when the alternator went (maybe a voltage spike) and that the gearbox is OK. She was silky smooth up to that point.

Question is, how hard is an alternator replacement? Is it a DIY job or an engine out as per everything else with this car.

Cheers

Not too bad, although you gotta move the lock carrier. Reckon I could do it 4 hours now. Prob 6 if you've not done it before.

Best place for a new alternator? ECP? They are selling a Lucas 150A one for about £315.

That's not much less than I paid to have a new alternator fitted by my regular garage. Shall have to check exact amount but he said it wasn't a particularly difficult job.

My alternator failed recently but the unit itself looked good, bearings felt smooth and windings looked good. I managed to get a Bosch Regulator/Rectifier for £44, now it's good as gold :D If only all problems worked out like that!

I'm going to have a chat with the guy at the local garage who does the work on our other vehicles. He's a really good mechanic and 100% honest so I trust him to give me an honest answer/price.

I changed mine a few years back took less than 2 hours on a ramp. No need to move lock carrier.

Coolio! I had read it's possible, but I was doing other stuff anyway when I did mine.
