Alloy refurb

Post by blm70 » Thu Jan 14, 2016 10:54 pm

Just collected the car after having all 4 wheels refurbished. Not had a chance to clean it yet and could only photograph in the dark, although I'll take more photos at the weekend. I've used Lepsons a few times before and have always been very pleased with the results. And to think at one point I was considering spending a similar amount on 4 'replica' TT RS alloys...

Rimtec, also in Kent (near Gravesend) are another good shout for refurbs and are a bit cheaper. Although when I popped down to see them, their store looks like a double car garage rather than a "proper" store :D

Oh, what happened?

I've used Lepsons 3 times now (Subaru Impreza, Saab 9-5 Aero and now the Audi) having had no issues with the Sub and Saab wheels, eventually selling the cars respectively 13 months and 20 months later. They also offer a 12 month guarantee, which includes diamond-cut wheels.

I had small spots of paint come off quite quickly. It was a little irritated given how nice they looked when I got them back.

I am in two minds if I would use them again, never had them look so good but not lasted nearly as well as the other sets of alloys I have redone. I have had 12 wheels for it at one time.

I think Lepsons must have a lot of staff who do a great job and 1-2 who are terrible. If you get the Good Staff then you'll have no issues but every now and again there's stories about bad finishes, chipping paint etc like above (and worse on another forum I've seen) after a very short amount of time. I've even seen one "horror" thread about a set that went back 3-4 times for exactly the same thing (didn't spray the centre bore which then corrodes). Yet there's lots of other people who've had nothing but a great service and are very happy.

Update: recently noticed a tiny chip (<1mm) on the outer edge of the o/s front wheel. Went back to Lepsons and their chief paint tech inspected it. He agreed it was a fault in the refurbishment process and they'll do the whole wheel again foc.

OK, it may just be a one-off, but at the same time I'm wondering if this is the tip of the iceberg.

Time will tell...
