Gearbox Limp Mode

Post by nai » Tue Jan 12, 2016 10:18 am

Hi All,

I have a C5 RS6 2003

Have had this issue for a few weeks now i will explain the best I can because it really is a strange one...

If i start the car with one motion of the key all is well...

If i turn the key to position 2 (All lights on, engine off) then start the car... the gearbox will go into limp mode (all PRNDS lit up)

if i switch the car off and back on all is well.

Have changed the oil and filter.. initially it was 2 liters down but have corrected this now.
Also have changed the battery for an original Audi one.
Checked all plugs to and from gearbox
Checked all wiring to all solenoids and the wiring loom.

fault code comes up with 18243 Control valve 5 (N223) short to plus.

Thanks

Didn't you already post a topic about this?

You could try cleaning the contacts, but that doesn't always help and you may need a new set of connectors.

Would this be the loom connected to the solenoids? I pulled them all out checked the whole look looks like a new loom ... however thinking about it

my drive way has alot of mud, when i check the multi plug which goes on the gearbox pan it had mud all around it. i did clean it but didn't seem to make a difference but wasn't a proper clean as i could not see inside the pins.

I would start by eliminating this. Make sure the connections are perfect.

If it's not that then I would trace back and maybe double up the earthing points temporarily to check that it's not a poor earth.

ok will need to get under there at some point.... have a feeling its a connection issue............

Also just to make sure... how much gear oil does the gearbox pan hold? and how much does the total gearbox hold?

thanks

If you need to replace the ATF then you'll need about 7 litres. Also there is a specific procedure you need to read up on. It's not a simple top up procedure.
