For the record, my box came from chester autos too and was on an exchange basis, they had one in stock - no complaints with their service.
IMVHO there's a world of difference between rebuilding an auto box ("magic" and "wizardry" as far as I'm concerned) vs pulling a motor and box to change them over.

Based on your experience and confidence in Volks, perhaps Volks doing the labour to replace the box, with the box rebuild coming from chester autos might have been a good compromise.

cheers Shoppinit
and cheers for the utterly pointless "should have gone to Unit20" remarks too Chunky, I shall ignore a cars immaculate service history and avoid using companies that have previously carried out work on my vehicles in future.
Your argument is complete nonsense in this instance, since i) Unit20 (as I suspected) only do the removing and refitting of the engine and transmission. Volkservice not only owned this car personally in the past but also rebuilt the engine so they not only know what they are doing but from personal experience (not just posts on a forum) I know I can trust them completely ii) since the service history shows this transmission place having replaced the TC previously it makes perfect sense to have them carry out the work this time (WITHOUT HINDSIGHT!)

My original post asked for suggestions for transmission specialists, not someone who knows how to remove and refit engine and drivetrain, I already know Volks can do that. And to further support my faith in them, when I dropped the car back off yesterday with them they said if its comes to it, they'll take the engine and box out themselves and refit it for me!

I have enough to sort at the moment without some smug <beep> thinking they know it all. But as I say, thanks again for the input.

So as I say, ive dropped the car back off, and Volks have as ever, kindly lent me another loan car while it goes back to the transmission "specialist".
Volks suggested the vague steering I mentioned may be alignment related and said they'll have it 4 wheel aligned to check for me.

So now I wait and hear. At least once ive given the transmission place one chance to rectify this I can take further action against them. They will only be getting this ONE chance to put everything right.

Wow, knickers twisted much?
Should have gone to Unit29 or MRC. I stand by that, and for a reason. Let's hope your garage can sort it this time.

I believe they use JT Automatics in Erith who rebuilt my 'box, TC and replaced my TCU about 6 months ago and so far it's been fine. It also saved me a few hundred £ going directly to JT. 2 year/24k mile warranty as well.

?? just how good do you need to be to put a transmission on a flat bed and send it off to be repaired?

anyway.. back in the real world...

Volks just rang and my transmission is sorted.. apparently it required a new accumulator to sort the slipping issue. The transmission place (Automatic Transmissions of Preston) clearly didn't give much of a stuff about what occurred or the damage they caused and have been spouting more highly suspect statements regarding what went wrong and what they've done.

But anyway, my car is now back with Volks, who are happy its no longer slipping. Volks are now sorting out all the problems Preston Transmission caused (they simply deny all knowledge of having done anything wrong) so theyre sorting the ignition related issues, damage to the wheels and drivers seat e.t.c and realigning the suspension for me.

So, Automatic Transmissions of Preston.. Avoid.
Volkservice Blackpool - incredible, cant recommend them enough.

I don't think people are "complaining" about the service Volks have given you, in fact Volks sound just as disappointed about this as yourself and have done a great deal to help. It's the transmission place that have caused the issues so when people are saying "use Unit20/MRC etc" it's not because they're better mechanics than Volks, it's because those companies *don't* use Preston transmission for the transmission work and it's their poor customer service which is the issue.

So when people recommend Unit20/MRC etc it's not a slight on Volks, it's that the transmission companies Unit20/MRC etc use currently have a much better customer service, which in turn means that Unit20/MRC etc get a much better reputation too.

As an aside, have Volks said anything about changing the transmission company they used to a different one as I can fully recommend Chester Autos if they do decide to change and Chesters not far from Blackpool either!

I posted that whilst pinching one out, I think I slipped when straining.
It seems the comment in jest wasn't taken that way by Mrihateunit20/29/mrc.

Lets see if he's calmed down and removed his twisted thong.

GLAD THE CAR IS SORTED  , BUT IF YOU COME ON HERE ASKING FOR ADVICE, IT'S GIVEN FOR A REASON.
